The original LP version of HOT ROD CITY was performed by two basic groups of surf and hot-rod musicians operating under three names. The Grand Prix and the Quads were conceived by songwriter-producer Richard Delvy, and the Customs were conceived by songwriter-producer Gary Usher. This 1995 reissue adds eight additional songs and alternate takes, including two previously-unreleased tracks by Delvy's main band, The Challengers. Pyramids Penetration! The Best Of The Pyramids CD (1995)
Hot Rod songs The Pyramids' moody post-Dick Dale guitar workouts were recorded as the surf genre began to fizzle out; the title tune was in fact the last big surf instrumental hit. This CD collects just about everything they ever recorded, including two previously unreleased tunes from an American International beach movie they appeared in along with Boris Karloff. Standout tracks include the de rigeur "Wipeout" homage (the self-referential "Pyramid Stomp") and "Sticks and Stones," which features a lengthy, jazz-tinged drum solo which, like most early rock drum solos, basically takes off from Cozy Cole's 1958 hit "Topsy Part Two."
