Magnificat CD (2000)
Josquin's famous Ave Maria and the Ave Maria of his English contemporary William Cornysh are juxtaposed, as are two popular Marian antiphons by Tomás Luis de Victoria and two polychoral motets by the Russian early baroque composer Vasily Titov, who apparently received the Venetian tradition by way of Henrich Schütz. Among the most affecting works on the program are the sacred contrafacta (works where a text is substituted without any alteration in the music) made from two madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi, where the melting chromaticism originally applied to one kind of love is now used in the service of another.
The beauty and intonation of Chanticleer's singing is well-nigh impeccable throughout the program, atmospherically recorded at California's Skywalker Ranch.
With the sweet sound and smooth blend of its 13 male voices, San Francisco-based Chanticleer is staking out its own distinctive territory among the elite early music vocal ensembles. Here they take on a variety of liturgical pieces focusing on the Virgin Mary. The examples are judiciously chosen, alternating chant and polyphony, the familiar and the relatively obscure.
