Composer Franz Lehar Discography (195)
Franz Lehar Biography
The reputation of Franz Lehár as a composer of operetta is assured. The son of a bandmaster serving principally in Hungary, he followed his father's profession, before winning, in 1902, success in the theatre in Vienna, where he succeeded in the following years in reviving the operetta, providing music of greater distinction, with tenor arias written specifically for Richard Tauber.
Operettas
Lehár wrote nearly forty operettas. Of these by the far the best known is Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), first staged in Vienna in 1905, the favourite operetta of Adolf Hitler.
Orchestral Music
Lehár also made a significant contribution to Viennese light music with some 65 waltzes and 50 or more marches.

| Atkinson Lehár: Giuditta / Bonynge, Riedel, Hadley, Itami, Et Al CD (1997) In English
Franz Lehar classical music
$15.05 Recording information: EMI Abbey Road, Studio 1, London, England. Jerry Hadley is no Nicolai Gedda, but he does the job well; Deborah Riedel makes a vocally alluring Giuditta, and Richard Bonynge is a very sympathetic conductor when it comes to this material, with more of a flowing and emphatic touch than Willi Boskovsky, making for brisker pacing and a more overtly upbeat mood to the proceedings. This performance is a good compromise for non-German speakers, however, as it is very easy to find and only takes up one CD instead of two. This English-language version of Franz Lehár's Giuditta is better realized than a typical highlights disc, but nowhere near as good as EMI's 130-minute version. Personnel: Jerry Hadley, Lynton Atkinson (tenor).
