All the music was improvised on site, with the musicians banging on metal pipes and found objects on the final track. The unlikely instruments -- primarily accordion, trombone, didjeridu, and voice -- produce sustained tones that are subtly modulated by the extraordinary acoustics, making it often seem as if there were more instruments present, or as if this music has been electronically processed -- neither of which is the case. On this project, released by the progressive San Francisco label New Albion, accordionist Pauline Oliveros has teamed up with trombonist Stuart Dempster and vocalist Panaiotis to produce a remarkable album of atmospheric space music. Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is world renowned as a leading centre in the contemporary performing arts. During this process, an additional trove of recordings from the seventies was discovered featuring the likes of Cage, Laurie Anderson and David Tudor. Over the past 30 years, The Kitchen has recorded all performances staged there. A collaborative partnership with the Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass's label Orange Mountain Music has led to the restoration of these tapes, resulting in the release of the first in a series of CDs from this fascinating source. In 1999 an initiative was undertaken to catalogue and re-master the entire archive. Focussing exclusively on the cutting edge, this institution continues to be a powerful force in shaping contemporary culture.
