Ernest Chausson BiographyAfter a sheltered childhood in a cultured family and subsequent study of law, Chausson became a pupil of Massenet at the Conservatoire, also attending the classes of César Franck. He led a generally peaceful life, shortened by a cycling accident, and echoed in his music the developments of the period, from Massenet to Debussy. Orchestral Music Chausson wrote relatively little orchestral music. Of the four surviving works, Poème, for solo violin and orchestra, is an important item in violin repertoire. He completed a single symphony, in B flat, with two surviving symphonic poems.

This excellent rendition of DAPHNE, recorded live in Italy in 2005, is sure to please fans of Richard Strauss. Structured in a single act, this opera is a solid work with a rich musical vein. Daphne is a masterpiece of early 20th-century vocal music. June Anderson turns in a remarkable performance as the lead character.
The creation of Daphne was not a simple affair, especially for what concerned the poetic text (due to the modest talent of the librettist Joseph Gregor), but on 15th October 1938 Richard Strauss' opera was finally premired at Dresden's Staatstheater. One of Strauss's masterpieces, DAPHNE is a meticulously structured one-act opera with rich, exquisite music.
