| Charlemagne Palestine Palestine: Schlingen-Blängen CD (1999)
New World Records classical music
$14.69 This album strongly features organ -- big, majestic church organ. Palestine, on organ, lays down what seems, superficially, to be one long sustained drone. Palestine cooked up new forms of minimalism as a member of the New York experimental music scene in the '60s and '70s. This is a 1988 recording of the piece. Hopefully, that will change--this disc is right up there with Riley's SHRI CAMEL and RAINBOW IN CURVED AIR and Brian Eno's DISCREET MUSIC as a minimalist classic. Because he chose a parallel career in the field of visual arts, and the comparably few recordings he's made, Palestine is not nearly as well-known as Philip Glass, Steve Reich or Terry Riley (whose music resembles, somewhat, his own), who have each made grand music out of repetition. Schlingen-Blängen is the seminal artist's 70-minute, mind-expanding journey undertaken on church organ. ~ Tom Schulte Charlemagne Palestine is one of the original minimalists in the music's short history.
