||William Shakespeare's Othello DVD (2005) |
Per Pieta For Tenor & Orchestra Work Shakespeare's keen understanding of jealousy in love resulted in one of his greatest triumphs, the tragic, violent OTHELLO. Othello, the Moor, is a soldier and nobleman whose marriage to the loyal Desdemona is untroubled by jealousy or conflict--until, that is, his trusted confidante Iago, envious of Othello's happiness, begins to scheme against the couple, igniting a jealous fury in the honorable hero. This 1987 reinterpretation, staged at South Africa's defiantly interracial Market Theatre, was the first time an African actor had played Othello opposite a white Desdemona in that turbulent city. The controversial performance garnered powerful and polarized reactions, but ultimately was considering a ravishing success. John Kani, a Tony-award winner, stars in the title role.
John Kani, Richard Haines, and Joanna Weinberg star in this production at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987. Janet Suzman directs.
