1.  Introduction   top
Digital music downloads, or MP3 downloads, are individual digital files of songs that are transferred from our website to your computer. Once you acquire the digital download (or MP3 file, as it’s commonly called), you can transfer it from your computer to another computer or to any electronic device that is compatible with the MP3 format.

There are many advantages to purchasing MP3s. Some of the more popular ones are:

  1. Flexibility: You can play MP3s on almost all of the popular media players available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux, like Windows Media™ Player, iTunes®, Winamp®, and many more. You can also construct custom playlists, transfer music to portable MP3 devices, and burn your favorite tunes to CD from your digital music library in these media players.
  2. Efficiency: With MP3s, you can store and organize thousands of songs all in one place and find exactly what you’re looking for in seconds with search and sorting options available in most media players.
  3. Instant availability: No more waiting for days for your music to be delivered. As soon as you purchase your MP3s, you can download and begin enjoying your tunes.
  4. Indestructible: CDs can break, get scratched, or even end up missing if you’re not careful. You don’t have to worry about these issues with MP3s. These files will last forever and can easily be backed up with cost-effective disc drives and online storage.
2.  How To Purchase Digital Music Downloads (MP3s)?   top
Currently, digital music downloads are only available to customers using credit or debit cards issued by a U.S bank with a U.S. billing address. Per the record labels, we are also obligated to restrict purchases to U.S. only IP addresses.

Purchasing MP3s are easy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Select the MP3 tab on the top of the page to get to our digital music section.
  2. Search for the music you want by using our search box or selecting a link in the browse categories on the left column of the webpage.
  3. Add MP3s to your shopping cart by clicking on the blue “Buy MP3” or “Buy MP3 Album” button. You’ll know that the item is in your cart because it will turn green and say “In Cart.”
  4. When you’re done, click on the “view cart” icon at the top of the webpage. Since you have items in the cart, it will be colorized.
  5. Choose the green “Complete Your Order” button.
  6. If you’re a returning customer, login with your account billing name and password. If this is your first time ordering with us, choose the “Create New Account” button.
  7. After you’ve logged in or created a new account, you’ll land on the “Ready To Finalize Order” page. This is the page where you enter your credit, debit, or gift card* information. If you have existing store credit on your account, it will appear on this page as well.
  8. Once you’ve entered your payment information, click on the “Finalize Your Order” button on the bottom of the page.
  9. If your order is successful, you’ll arrive at the order confirmation page where you will be given an order number and a “Download Your Purchases**” button.
* Gift cards must have the Visa or MasterCard logo in order to be accepted.

** If your card fails to authorize or if you have an existing account where you had credit card issues on a past order, you will not be able to download your MP3s immediately. In this case, we will send a confirmation email once your MP3 purchase is available to download.

3.  How To Download Your MP3 Purchases?   top
Follow these steps to successfully download your MP3 purchases to your computer.

  1. Click on the “Download Your Purchases” button on the order confirmation page.

    If you clicked away from that page, login to your account by clicking on the “Your Account” icon on the top of the webpage and choose the “view order status” link under the Customer Account Management section. Choose the appropriate order number then click the “Download Your Purchases” button.

  2. On the next page you’ll see the CD Universe Download manager, which is a Java applet. In order to use this applet, you must have Java installed on your computer. To download Java, click here. For help on installing Java and the current top 15 Java issues, click here.
  3. By default, all selections you have available for download will have a check mark in the “get” column. This will allow you to download all of your MP3s in one shot. If you do not want to download a particular song at this time, you can uncheck the “get” box in the song’s row.

    You are allowed two successful downloads per song from CD Universe. After you successfully complete a download, you are free to use it as you choose for personal use*.

  4. Click the green download button to begin downloading your MP3s.
  5. A dialog box will pop up and allow you to specific download location. The location you’ll first see when the box appears is what you have set by default in your browser. We recommend choosing a location on your computer where you regularly store your digital music or a location that is easy for you to remember.
  6. After you hit the save button, the download will automatically start and you’ll see the status in the progress column. After a few moments or several minutes (depending on your internet connection speed), your downloads will complete and a dialog box will appear indicating a successful download.

    Also, a new browser window will pop up, which will be the location of where your newly downloaded files reside. The MP3 files will be in a folder in this location, and the title will be the artist or band’s name.

  7. If you want to bypass the CD Universe Java download manager or are unable to run Java on your browser, you can click the bypass link right under the Java manager. On the next page, simply click on the titles of the songs one by one and select the appropriate download destination when the dialog box appears.
*Copyright laws still apply to digital downloads. If you would like to use your download purchase for commercial use, you will have to contact the copyright holders, which are usually the artist or band’s record label and/or publisher. CD Universe does not hold copyrights to any of the music we sell and cannot grant permissions for commercial use.

4.  How To Play MP3s After Downloading?   top
Two of the most popular computer MP3 players are Windows Media Player and iTunes. Here’s:

On Windows Media Player:

  1. Open Windows Media Player.
  2. Click on the “Library” tab at the top of the window.
  3. Choose the “Add to Library…” option.
  4. Select the folder location of your MP3 download.
  5. Once the song appears in the library window, select it and hit the blue play button at the bottom of the player.
On iTunes®
  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Choose “File” then select “Add File To Library...”
  3. Select the file in the folder where you downloaded your purchase.
  4. Locate the file name in the iTunes library window.
  5. Click the “play” button at the top of the player.
5.  Troubleshooting MP3 Downloads   top
Problem: My download finished, but I can’t find it.

Solution: Check the default save locations. You can find your browser's default save locations by checking the settings:

Firefox:

  1. Select “Tools”, then “Options” from the menu at the top of the browser.
  2. Under the “General” tab, look at the "Save files to" option in the Downloads section.
Internet Explorer:
  1. Select “Tools”, then “Options” from the menu at the top of the browser.
  2. Under the “General” tab, look at the "Save files to" option in the Downloads section.
Safari:
  1. Select the icon that looks like a gear at the top right-hand part of the browser menu bar.
  2. Select “Preferences.”
  3. Under the “General” tab, look at the "Save downloaded files to" option. Or, browse to your default music folder (default location is "Downloads" in your "My Music" folder in "My Documents") and double-click the song when you find it.
Problem: I tried to play my MP3 but the file wouldn't play, the quality was poor, it skipped, or was incomplete.

Solution: Contact customer service. If you just downloaded your music and it doesn't play correctly, please use the email form at http://www.cduniverse.com/help/contact.asp to get in touch with us and we will be happy to further assist you and check the file for errors.

6.  What is the optimal setup for downloading music on CD Universe?   top

7.  Is there a time limit for downloading MP3s?   top
From the date of your purchase, you have 90 days to download the song(s) to your computer. Once that expires, the download will no longer be available, however you will still see the listing in your download history.

8.  How many times can I download my MP3 purchase?   top
You can download any MP3 purchases up to two times. To download additional times you will need to repurchase the item(s). Please contact us if you are having difficulties downloading your purchases and we will be glad to assist you.

9.  What is the sound quality of the MP3 Downloads?   top
Our MP3 files vary from 128kbps to 320kbps. This means you can expect high-quality, digital sound from our MP3 downloads.

10.  What does DRM-free mean?   top
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management – a type of software that puts limitations on media files, controlling how they can be shared, copied or played. Downloads purchased from CD Universe are DRM-free meaning they do not contain this type of software and so there are no restrictions on your use.

11.  Why are Music Downloads only available in MP3 format?   top
The biggest reason is that most media players support the MP3 format. The additional benefit is that our MP3 downloads do not have any software restrictions, allowing you the freedom to copy and play your files however you wish.

12.  What are the technical specifications of MP3 Music Download files?   top

  • Bit Rate: Bit rate varies from 128kbps to 320kbps. This fluctuation is the result of using a variable rate to encode our MP3 files. As the complexity of the music varies, so does the bit rate. Higher rates are designated to more intricate passages allowing CD Universe to provide high-quality digital audio with smaller file sizes.
  • File Size: The average song can vary greatly depending on quality and length of the song. Sizes can range from 100kb to 20+ Mb files.
  • Download Times: Download times will vary depending upon the file size and your Internet connection. On a dial-up connection a 5MB file will download in approximately 30 minutes. To download the same file via broadband (Cable, DSL) would take less than one minute.

13.  Can I burn my MP3 files on a CD and listen to it on my CD player?   top
Yes. Most CD burning software and CD or DVD players with MP3 capabilities should be able to read MP3 files downloaded from CD Universe.

14.  Can I download another copy of my MP3 files after the initial purchase?   top
No. You may only download an MP3 music file purchased from CD Universe one time. Additionally, we cannot replace your music files if they are lost or deleted – whatever the reason so creating backup copies of your files is highly recommended.

Please contact Customer Service immediately if you experience any problems with your MP3 files after completing your purchase.

15.  Can I return an MP3 Music Download after I buy it?   top
No. Unfortunately music files are not returnable so you should take the time before your purchase to be certain that your choices are correct. Please contact Customer Service if you have questions or need further assistance with your download.

16.  Can international customers buy MP3 Music from CDUniverse?   top
No. Unfortunately, CD Universe can only provide MP3 music downloads to customers using credit or debit cards issued by a U.S bank with a U.S. billing address.
