Original Broadway Cast Li'l Abner (Orig. Cast) CD (2002)
She Loves Me Soundtrack Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened on November 15, 1956, it became the only stage work with which Mercer was associated to turn a profit, running 693 performances. Actually, the score isn't as strong as that for one of Mercer's flops, St. Louis Woman, but it is appropriate to the subject matter. The songs "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands," and "Progress Is the Root of All Evil" wittily capture Capp's sense of humor and dim view of politics. There are also some attractive romantic ballads, notably "Namely You" and "Love in a Home," both of which became minor hits. Edith "Edie" Adams and Stubby Kaye lead a cast of unknowns who give their all to the show's broad comedy. A key element of Lil' Abner's success was the staging and choreography of director Michael Kidd, not available on record, although the 2002 reissue adds the main dance number, "Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet." The disc is, in fact, full of new material, including a stereo version of the "Overture" (Li'l Abner was Columbia Records' last cast album not recorded in stereo, but the label was experimenting); the previously unreleased song "What's Good for General Bullmoose"; an expanded version of the finale, "The Matrimonial Stomp"; "There's Room Enough for Us," from the 1959 soundtrack album; and pop versions of two songs cut from the score, Percy Faith's "The Way to a Man's Heart" and Rosemary Clooney's "It's a Nuisance Having You Around." ~ William Ruhlmann

Jim Dale / Original Broadway Cast Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) CD (2002) Top Seller
She Loves Me Soundtrack Music composed by Cy Coleman. Lyrics written by Michael Stewart.
Marianne Tatum (Jenny Lind); Terri White (Joice Heth); Leonard John Crofoot (Tom Thumb); William C. Witter (Ringmaster, Julius Goldschmidt, James A. Bailey).
Originally released on Columbia (36576). Includes liner notes by Jim Dale.
Barnum, the musical theater treatment of the life of impresario Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum (1810-1891) that followed the famed promoter from his first show in 1835 to his 1881 merging of his circus with that of James Anthony Bailey to form the Barnum & Bailey Circus, became a long-running success on Broadway upon its opening on April 30, 1980, largely due to the talents of its star, 44-year-old British actor/singer Jim Dale, who embodied the title role with all the extroverted charm required and won a Tony award for his trouble. Composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Michael Stewart's score was appealing, especially the inevitable "There Is a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute" (Barnum's catch phrase), the lyrical ballad "The Colors of My Life," the lively "Come Follow the Band," and "Join the Circus," which Barnum and Bailey later featured as a theme song. Naturally, Coleman used circus music as his main inspiration, and Stewart imbued his lyrics with Barnum's sense of engaging balderdash. Barnum discoveries Joice Heth (Terri White), Tom Thumb (Leonard Crofoot), and Jenny Lind (Marianne Tatum) got their own songs, and there was a ringmaster (William C. Witter), who treated Barnum's life as though it was a series of circus acts. As Barnum's wife, Glenn Close had a rather thankless part, but she made the best of it, notably in her only solo, "The Colors of My Life (Part II)." Barnum necessarily loses a lot in a mere aural version, not only because Dale's stage-filling performance can't be seen, but also because the show on-stage is full of other circus performances. Still, the score is a stylistically consistent work that Dale and associates bring out well. The 2002 reissue adds four demos by Coleman and Stewart, including the cut songs "At Least I Tried" and "So Little Time." ~ William Ruhlmann

Anthony Newley Stop the World, I Want to Get Off CD (1962) Top Seller
She Loves Me Soundtrack Music and lyrics written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
Recorded in 1962. Originally released on London (58001). Includes liner notes by David Merrick and Anthony Newley.
It was not a 'coach party' show, and this album only stayed in the UK chart for 14 weeks, but Stop The World proved to be the launching pad for authors and songwriters Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, and remains a remarkable piece of work. Newley and his co-star Anna Quayle share some marvellous songs on this recording, including 'Typically English' and 'Someone Nice Like You', but it is the enormous hits, such as 'What Kind Of Fool Am I?', 'Once In A Lifetime', and 'Gonna Build A Mountain', for which the show is inevitably remembered. After more than 30 years, worn-out copies can now be replaced by the 1989 CD reissue.

Apple Tree CD (1966)
She Loves Me Soundtrack THE APPLE TREE opened at the Shubert Theater in New York on October 18, 1966 and ran 463 performances, closing on November 25, 1967. The plot consists of three separate stories (THE DIARY OF ADAM AND EVE, THE LADY OR THE TIGER and PASSIONELLA), based on works by Mark Twain, Frank R. Stockton, and Jules Feiffer.
Songwriters and librettists Jerry Bock And Sheldon Harnick followed their once-in-a-lifetime success with Fiddler On The Roof by writing The Apple Tree, an experimental musical that adapted three short stories, Mark Twain's "The Diary Of Adam And Eve," Frank R. Stockton's "The Lady Or The Tiger?," and Jules Feiffer's "Passionella," each with a cast featuring Alan Alda, Barbara Harris, and Larry Blyden. There turned out to be little to tie the three tales together, although each was a love story with unconventional complications. The tone of the work varied from romantic to satiric even within each story, and the acting tended to be so precious and cloying that it was hard for the viewer (and now the listener) to have much emotional involvement. Nevertheless, a new show by the authors of the still-running Fiddler On The Roof probably couldn't have been a major flop, and The Apple Tree managed to run for over a year. The cast album reveals competent writing and particularly enthusiastic performances by Harris, though the only memorable song is "What Makes Me Love Him?," which has some of the funny, touching quality of Fiddler's "Do You Love Me?" ~ William Ruhlmann
All music written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick.
