This 83 minute feature film DVD is from 1956. Sterling Hayd en (Dr. Strangelove) watches his perfectly planned racetrac k heist unravel in this spellbinding thriller directed by S tanley Kubrick. THE KILLING made director Stanley Kubrick famous, influencing many future features, including Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS. The tense, tight story flashes back to examine with clinical precision the events that lead up to a racetrack robbery.. Sterling Hayden stars in Stanley Kubrick's crime noir classic, THE KILLING, based on crime Lionel White's novel CLEAN BREAK. Hayden plays Johnny Clay, an ex-con with a plan to steal $2 million from a San Francisco racetrack. He assembles an odd collection of tough guys and moles to participate in the heist. But just as there is no such thing as the perfect murder, there is no such thing as the perfect crime...
The film features terrific performances from Hayden, Elisha Cook, Marie Windsor, and the rest of the talented cast. Kubrick, who brought in pulp writer Jim Thompson to create the perfect dialogue, tells the story with a nonlinear, fractured-time narrative, following each of the main characters separately as they prepare for the big day. Featuring Kubrick's flawless direction and wonderfully atmospheric photography, anchored by a jazz-tinged score by Gerald Fried, THE KILLING is one of the most intense noir heist films ever made. Filmed in on location at the Golden Gate Racetrack in San Francisco and at Chaplin Studios in California.
Estimated budget: $330,000. The film was shot in 24 days.
THE KILLING premiered as the second half of a double feature; Richard Fleischer's BANDIDO! was the main film.
Director Stanley Kubrick formed a production company with James B. Harris, Harris-Kubrick Pictures, before making this film.
Kubrick and Harris bought the rights to the Lionel White novel for $10,000.
The union would not allow Kubrick to serve as the cameraman, so he oversaw Lucien Ballard's work very closely.
DAY OF VIOLENCE and BED OF FEAR were both working titles for the film.
Jack Palance and Victor Mature were both considered for the part that went to Sterling Hayden.
Kubrick took no fee as director of the film.
The target horse was named Red Lightning, running in the seventh race, the $100,000 Added Landsdowne Stakes.
Rodney Dangerfield appears as an extra in the racetrack fight scene.
One of the horses in the race in which all of the characters are called to a meeting is Stanley K, named for the director.
Joe Turkel, here playing a hood, played eerie Lloyd the bartender in Kubrick's THE SHINING.
United Artists originally wanted CLEAN BREAK as a vehicle for Frank Sinatra.
Sterling Hayden was paid $40,000 for his lead role.
Art director Ruth Sobotka was Kubrick's wife at the time.
Kubrick delayed filming in order to to wait until actress Marie Windsor was finished with another film, Roger Corman's SWAMP DIAMONDS. Killing Quotes/Excerpts: "You got a great big dollar sign there, where most women have a heart."--Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) to Sherry Peatty (Marie Windsor)
Killing Reviews: "...Sterling Hayden and a great second-rung cast -- Vince Edwards, Elisha Cook Jr., Marie Windsor, Timothy Carey and more -- are sizzling as a litany of losers..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...This is bravura filmmaking. It's not just the formal brilliance that makes the film so distinctive, but the affection and wry humor with which Kubrick portrays his low-life protagonists..."

Killing review
$6.95 Francis Ford Coppola's THE CONVERSATION is a towering achievement, a masterfully constructed portrait of one man's descent into madness. Gene Hackman delivers a devastating performance as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who gets paid to invade the privacy of strangers. The film's classic opening shot is a long, slow zoom into Union Square in San Francisco, as a young couple, Mark (Frederic Forrest) and Ann (Cindy Williams), are having what seems like an otherwise mundane conversation. However, when it is revealed that Harry and his assistant Stanley (John Cazale) are eavesdropping from a nearby van, it becomes clear that something more serious is happening. Later, after Harry painstakingly reconstructs the conversation from several different audio sources, he uncovers a snippet of dialogue ...

Killing DVD
$9.69 PATHS OF GLORY is among the most powerful antiwar films ever made. The story takes place in 1916 France, as the French command orders an exhausted unit to wrest control of an anthill from the Germans--expecting a casualty rate of 60 percent. The battle--during which the Germans are never seen, indicating that the French are their own worst enemy--turns into a bloody massacre. Looking for a scapegoat, General Mireau (George Macready) orders Colonel Dax (a never-more-intense Kirk Douglas) to select three of his men to face a court-martial and possible firing squad for the troops' cowardice. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, PATHS OF GLORY, based on the novel by Humphrey Cobbs, is a gut-wrenching, unforgettable drama. Every scene is awash in grays, covered in doom. Kubrick marvelously contrasts the ornate palace where the generals sip their cognac with the ramshackle trenches where injured men stumble about, demoralized and shellshocked. Douglas gives a tough, gritty performance; his tense sparring with the high command features sharp, biting dialogue. The entire cast is outstanding; ...

Killing movie DVD
$9.69 KILLER'S KISS, Stanley Kubrick's second feature-length film (though barely more than an hour), tells the story of a down-and-out boxer who falls for a comely female neighbor, leading to kidnapping and murder. Davey Gordon has seemingly fought his last fight after being pummeled by Kid Rodriguez in the first round. Gloria Price is the hard-luck dame whose window faces Davey's. A dancer at Pleasureland, Gloria is trying to break up with her boss, Vincent Rapallo, but he would rather see her dead before allowing her to be with another man. So when Davey and Gloria start a steamy romance, it isn't long before murder enters the picture.
Somewhat similar to his 1951 boxing documentary, DAY OF THE FIGHT, Kubrick's gritty black-and-white film noir, told in flashbacks, was shot on location in the streets of New York, effectively ...

Killing film
$14.49 When released theatrically in 1932, FREAKS was met with near universal disgust by critics and audiences alike, lasting in theatres for only a short time in the states and banned in England. The film stars Harry Earles as Hans, a suave midget who belongs to the sideshow of a seedy circus and who makes the mistake of falling in love with the beautiful Cleopatra, one of the "normal" circus performers. Learning that Hans is about to inherit a fortune, Cleopatra agrees to marry Hans even though she abhors him, planning to steal his money and get rid of him. When the freaks of the circus, who keep a watchful eye on Cleopatra, discover her scheme, they plan to exact an unforgettable revenge.
Far more unsettling than Browning's best known horror film, DRACULA, FREAKS has long been neglected due to its subject matter, even though it is a genuinely effective film. ...
