162 minute feature film DVD starring John Wayne and Linda C ristal. THE ALAMO is John's Wayne's patriotic, pro-American recounting of the famous siege at a Texas fort. For 13 days in 1836, a group of Americans, led by Sam Houston, fought 7,000 Mexican soldiers to retain control of the Alamo and to wrest Texas from Mexico and make it part of the United States.
The Duke directs (with the uncredited help of his friend and mentor John Ford) this flag-waving spectacular about the courageous struggle by 182 American heroes to defend a small Catholic mission to the death and eventually win Texas with the help of Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston. The restored, widescreen edition of Wayne's epic is at the original length and includes the theatrical trailer. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Song ("Green Leaves of Summer"). Academy Awards: Best Sound. Film was cut by about 30 minutes after its Los Angeles premiere, and it is that cut version that is often available on video. (The original time was 193 minutes, and the video is 161.) The restored version contains extra footage, previously unseen.
Although Wayne directed (this was his first time at the helm), there is supposition that John Ford, who was on the set, might have assisted with some of the filming. There is also a possibility that the final battle scene, which received critical acclaim, might be attributable to second-unit director Cliff Lyons.
There is much historical research on the period suggesting that some of the heroes of the Alamo might not have been so heroic--particularly Davy Crockett, who allegedly surrendered, was alcoholic, and beat his wife.
The film was shot in Texas, in 12 days, near the actual location of the Alamo, although Wayne had originally thought of filming in Mexico.
Shot in Todd-AO; color by Technicolor.
Budget estimate $12 million. Alamo Reviews: "...[With a] great score...[and a] magnificent climactic battle scene..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...The battle scenes are fine, the Duke is as watchable as ever..."

Enjoyable John Wayne fare I recenty returned from San Antonio and actually purchased this DVD in the Alamo gift shop. This was preceded by a lengthy discussion (or rather, "lecture") that I received at the hands of some old gal who was apparently associated with the Alamo Historical Society after I indicated that Santa Ana seemed to be quite reasonable in his approach to this matter. After all, they were trying to grab a piece of HIS country, he warned them to get out and allowed the women and children to depart, unharmed.
I mention this because, if nothing else, I thought that this version of the movie succeeded in a fair depiction of both sides of the story. The gringos were not depicted as a bunch of nice guys who were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time and Santa Ana was not depicted as bloodthirsty.
Finally, if you visit the Alamo, avoid a discussion with the old gal behind the desk or you'll never get out of that place. Submitted by BrianP (Fremont, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Duke And The Alamo The Duke's version of the Alamo story is not an accurate one,but it is still a really good movie. The final battle is one of the best depictions of the Alamo defenders' last stand. Submitted by blake (brandon,ms) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$7.69 In the town of El Dorado, wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner) is embroiled in a struggle with the MacDonald family, who own a large amount of land just outside town lines. Jason hires gunman Cole Thornton (John Wayne) to scare the MacDonalds in hope that they'll back down. Cole is pleased to discover that his old friend J.B. (Robert Mitchum) is now the sheriff of the town. The sheriff warns Cole that involvement with the crooked Jason will get him arrested. Further circumstances entwine the hired gun with the MacDonald family, and he sets out to destroy Jason. Hawks' unheralded western, with a fine script by Leigh Brackett (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), features plot similarities to his earlier classic RIO BRAVO.
This 126 minute feature film is a DVD starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan.
| | Rooster Cogburn (...And The Lady) DVD (1975) Keep Case; Widescreen
Alamo review
$10.25 John Wayne reprises his role as Rooster Cogburn, the eye-patched, whiskey-guzzling deputy marshall from TRUE GRIT. While on the trail of a gang of outlaws led by his old partner Hawk (a truly villainous Richard Jordan), Rooster teams up with bible-thumping missionary Eula Goodnight (Katherine Hepburn) to avenge the murder of her father by the gang. The chemistry between Wayne and Hepburn is palpable as barbs fly between the grumpy gunman and feisty missionary, and Strother Martin delivers a sparkling cameo.

$6.55 Frank Pierce (Bruce Cabot) is a ruthless man bent on manipulating the cattle business towards his own wealth and prosperity. When Taw Jackson (John Wayne), an honest rancher, interferes with his plans, Pierce imprisons him and confiscates his gold-filled land. Escaping the prison, Taw plans a raid on Pierce's heavily guarded pay roll carriage, but not if Pierce has anything to say about it. After assembling a group of misfits and hired guns, Taw runs into serious opposition when he encounters the madcap gunslinger, Lomax (Kirk Douglas). Sent by Pierce to stop the raid, Lomax winds up taking a liking to Taw, and they decide to join forces and stage a raid on Pierce's WAR WAGON.
Famous for its fighting scenes between John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, WAR WAGON is quintessential of its genre. WAR WAGONS features astonishing stunts and pyrotechnics. Advanced for its time (it was released in 1969) one would think Kennedy produced it in the mid '70s. The climactic end scene which pits Douglas and Wayne against a Gatling gun has spawned similar scenes in RED DAWN and YOUNG GUNS. WAR WAGON is a modern and triumphant film.

Alamo movie DVD
$8.59 Howard Hawks's final film once again teams him with John Wayne, with a script by Leigh Brackett (who also wrote his EL DORADO and RIO BRAVO). The time is just after the end of the Civil War. Wayne is Union Colonel Cord McNally, who is teamed with two Confederate soldiers he captured during the war in order to take down a thieving bootlegger. Their travels take them to a small town being held in terror by an evil Sheriff. McNally and his crew decide to help the townspeople with their own brand of justice. With a considerable amount of humor and Hawks's reliable formula in which a motley band of men unite for a common cause, RIO LOBO is a fitting conclusion to both his western trilogy and a distinguished career.

$8.55 John Wayne is Jacob McCandles, an aging cowboy in an Old West that is on the verge of modernization. When his eight-year-old grandson is kidnapped by a violent gang led by the evil John Fain (Richard Boone), Jacob's estranged wife (Maureen O' Hara) enlists his help to rescue the boy. Jacob and his three sons (one of whom is portrayed by Wayne's real-life son Patrick) set out to bring the gang to justice. This late-period Wayne western is characterized by a gritty realism not present in most of his earlier works. The surprisingly graphic violence is also tempered with abundant humor.

| | Berlin Jazz Piano Workshop 1965 DVD (2007) Spain
Alamo review
$15.69 Berlin's 1965 Jazz Piano Workshop reunited some of the instrument's finest exponents from the full stylistic spectrum of jazz piano. The great Teddy Wilson was on hand to represent the swing piano style; the father of jazz piano improvisation Earl Hines was also present; Lennie Tristano served as an exponent of modern exploratory piano playing; two of the idiom's most lyrical modern pianists, Bill Evans and John Lewis were in attendance, and a nexus between the traditional and the modern, Jaki Byard -who alternated free and stride passages on the same tune- filled out this historical lineup. A notable absence was pianist Bud Powell, who was then living a troublesome period which would end with his death the following year. The two other main influences missing from the performance were Thelonious Monk, who was touring Europe with his own band, and Art Tatum, who had died in 1956.
