One of the all-time great war films, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is yet another classic from the marvelous David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO). The film is an outstanding, psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1952 novel, a classic story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American intelligence officers conspire to blow up the structure, but Col. Nicholson (a fabulous Alec Guinness), the commander who supervised the bridge's construction, has acquired a sense of pride in his creation and tries to foil their plans. Although credited to screenwriter Carl Foreman, the script was actually written by blacklisted writer Michael Wilson. The film garnered seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Guinness). The climax is one of the great finales in film history.

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1997. Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, stood in for Burma (now known as Myanmar).

5 stars Wonderful
I liked this movie from the first time i saw it. It might date me but my view has never changed. One of the best war movies of its time.

5 stars Classic: In top twenty-five of all time
William Holden won the best actor oscar for the 1953 classic "Stalag 17", another WWII prison flick, but lost out to Alec Guinness for "Bridge". However, Holden did decide to "not get paid" and instead took a percentage of the movies gross earnings. First actor to do so and, consequently, the first actor who never needed to work again. This is one of those rare, wonderfully classic movies with great direction by David Lean, beautifully acted by ALL involved and a great story. Quite simply one of the best movies made.

1 star Fairy tale
My Father was a POW held by the Japanese, as for this film goes it is a fairy tale, so far away from the truth, OK the acting is okay but the screen play and script is a fantasy, and is very cosy to watch, as if you were to watch what really happened you would be very shocked. sorry

5 stars The quintessential Saturday night movie
For me, this movie represents the very essence of sitting at home on a Saturday night watching a movie. The various elements comprising this movie (not the least of which is the music)are essentially perfect and meld to form something which is greater than the sum of its parts. I'd also have to say that this movie holds tremendous nostalgic value for me, which no doubt contributes to its enjoyment.

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB is Stanley Kubrick's Cold War masterpiece. Based on the novel RED ALERT by Peter George, the film is set at the height of the tensions between Russia and the United States, when all it would take to destroy the world was one push of a button. And General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) is just the man to do it. Convinced that the Russians have infiltrated America's "vital essence," the crazed Ripper gives the go code to the 843rd bomb wing to attack Russia, setting in motion a series of darkly hilarious vignettes involving gung-ho soldiers, wacky generals, spying Russians, drunken premiers, battles with soda machines, fights in the War Room, and the Russians' top-secret Doomsday Machine. Shot in black and white, the film has three main centers of action: one of the B-52 bombers, on which a group of loyal men know they are about to start World War III; Burpelson Air Force ...

John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best. Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the ...

With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard ...
