This 82 minute black & white silent feature film is a DVD. Dreyer's retelling of the trial and martyrdom of Joan of Arc remains one of the most immediate--and startlingly intimate--works of cinema ever produced. Based upon a meticulous study of the transcripts from Joan's trial for heresy in 1431, Dreyer's approach eschewed the grand-scale typical of the epic silent productions of his contemporaries in favor of a stark, angular cinematography filmed almost entirely in close-ups. The result is a stunning, emotional film, carried by French actress Falconetti's inspired, haunting performance, which remains unparalleled to this day. Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer's dramatization of the trial and martyrdom of Joan of Arc remains one of the most striking and original films ever made. Shot entirely in close-ups and utilizing techniques years ahead of his contemporaries, Dreyer's deft cinematography and direction captures the intense emotional and spiritual turmoil of the young martyr--immortalized by the French actress Maria Falconetti in her sole screen performance. The original version, thought lost forever, was discovered in the janitor's closet of a Norwegian mental institution in 1981. Although Joseph Delteil's novel was the film's supposed source, and though he was credited as a co-scriptwriter, much of the film's dialogue was taken from the historical records of Joan of Arc's trial.
This was Falconetti's only screen role. She appeared on the stage in Paris.
The film was censored by the Catholic Church when it was released in France. In the years 1940-44, Nazi Germany also prohibited screening of the film in all of its occupied countries.
Produced by the Societe Generale des Films; distributed by M. J. Gourland. Passion Of Joan Of Arc Reviews: "...Dreyer cuts the film into a series of startling images....An unsettling experience -- so intimate we fear we will discover more secrets than we desire..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...Carl Dreyer's hallmark of world cinema is re-created history. An no movie has done it better..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...An affecting, indelible masterpiece..."
-- Jamie Graham, Total Film

Passion Of Joan Of Arc Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Filmic Art? This is the greatest film that I have ever seen. I first saw it in my silent film class, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. This is one of the few films whose stunning composition can be viewed without any naration. This is the film to watch if you are into filmic art. Submitted by a reviewer (Santa Barbara, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A little hammy; brilliant camera work I saw this film with Richard Einhorn conducting the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington DC) and Anonymous Four and a choral group performing Mr. Einhorn's cantata inspired by this film. I found the "evil" cardinals were a bit hammy, over-acted (usually typical for the time). The camera movements and stark sets, however, were absolutely stunning - decades ahead of Hollywood and the limited French and German cinema that I've seen. This is a film that educates, startles, and alas makes an average citizen giggle once in a while. But the climax, with the camera swinging with the bell, and the conflagration, is overwhelming, nearly mind-numbing in its chilly reality. Really worth seeing, but be aware of the acting styles of the time. Submitted by Nathan (Columbia, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$8.85 Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (guitar, organ, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass instrument); Peter Baumann (flute, electric piano, organ); Chris Franke (keyboards, Moog synthesizer). Phaedra is one of the most important, artistic, and exciting works in the history of electronic music, a brilliant and compelling summation of Tangerine Dream's early avant-space direction balanced with the synthesizer/sequencer technology just beginning to gain a foothold in nonacademic circles. The result is best heard on the 15-minute title track, unparalleled ...

Passion Of Joan Of Arc review
$12.99 Julian Cope wrote, 'There is no group more mythical than Faust'. Both these albums have been very difficult to find for years. Now their first two CD's available on one CD. Their debut 'Faust' was truly a revolutionary step forward in the progress of 'rock music'. Originally released in 1971, it was pressed on clear vinyl, packaged in a clear sleeve, with a clear plastic lyric insert. The black X-ray of a fist on the cover graphically illustrates the hard core music contained in the grooves, electronics, rock tape edits, acoustic guitars, musique concrete and industrial angst. The second from 1972 moves closer to actual song structure, but still remains experimental. Standard jewelcase. ...
