Setting the temporal starting point of the classic H.G. Wells novel in the year 1960 (rather than 1900), this engrossing adaptation follows the Time Traveler as he passes through World Wars I, II, and III and finally stops in the year 802,701. There he finds an apathetic, placid people called the Eloi and falls in love with one of their number, the beauteous blonde Weena. To his horror, however, he learns that the Eloi's apathy is generated by a maniacal, cannibalistic underworld--and that the only way to help them is to incite a revolution. George Pal's version of THE TIME MACHINE is an exciting and faithful cinematic production of H.G. Wells's 1895 classic. Academy Awards: Best Special Effects.

5 stars The First and Best- The Time Machine 1960
Director George Pal did a fantastic job with keeping the movie close to the book written by H.G.Wells. Rod Taylor plays George, an inventor, who after many years of seclusion in his lab, invents a time machine. After giving his four friends a demonstration of a miniture time machine, only one believes . The special effects are well done for 1960. Traveling thousands of years into the future, George meets the Eloi, a race of humans living above ground. After saving a woman from drowning , his eyes are opened up to the real horror of the future. There was a 2002 version of the Time Machine and despite its super computer generated special effects, it still can not compare to the origional. If you are even mildly interested in Science Fiction, don't pass this one up. Starring Rod Taylor, Alan Young and Yvette Mimeux.

5 stars Another 'must have' classic!
In the vein of the original 'The War of the Worlds', or 'Forbidden Planet' the Time Machine is a classic. Technically, dramatically it is tops! Well acted by Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimeaux, it tells a story, not just an exercise in CGI. Once you see this, you will think of this often. It is thought provoking.

5 stars The Best TT movie ever made.
This is my favorite TT movie, I prefer this original version with Rod Taylor, but the newer version (2002 has the best special effects. This & the newer version are the best TT movies ever made, I think.

5 stars Time Machine ticks
The original Time Machine is a fantastic movie. The Time Machine itself is a marvelous piece of inventive design by Wah Chang and the special effects were great. No digital magic there but real creative thinking. I loved the film

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever made. Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful ...

Celebrating the art of flamenco dancing and the culture from which it was born, VENGO is about a centuries-old dispute between two gypsy families in Andalusia, Spain. Separated into two groups of constantly battling gangs, the families struggle to move beyond violence to overcome their misunderstandings. Between confrontations, a physically disabled young man, Diego (Orestes Villasan Rodriguez), who has a passion for flamenco music and dance, is entertained by his uncle, Caco (Antonio Canales). Caco, whose own daughter died young, treats Diego like a son. To nurture Diego's love of flamenco, Caco arranges for some of the top performers in the region to come give concerts. In an especially powerful scene, La Caita, a gypsy singer, wails her liberating anthems in a Seville restaurant. Tony Gatlif (LATCHO DROM, GADJO DILO) directs this culturally rich, soulful film, which uses the rapid tempo of flamenco percussion to express both happiness and pain. A jumping, unsteady camera, and an often blurry focus give VENGO a visually realistic, documentary feeling. Extreme close-ups draw viewers to the characters, while distanced shots of eclectic parties and performances push the viewer back away ...
