When an eccentric uncle wills a huge, ramshackle house to Cyrus and his impoverished family, they get the shock of a lifetime. Their new residence comes complete with a spooky housekeeper (Margaret Hamilton), plus a fortune in buried treasure and 12 horrifying ghosts--including a decapitated man, a wailing lady and a flaming skeleton--who are held captive in the eerie house and must find an unlucky 13th to free them! This ghoulish fright-fest from producer/director/gimmick-meister William Castle was filmed in Illusion-O! An impoverished family inherits a ramshackle house that comes complete with a spooky housekeeper, a fortune in buried treasure, and a bunch of horrifying ghosts looking to be set free. This high-spirited spook show from producer-director William Castle features a haunted house populated by the record number of ghosts in the film's title. The plot has the destitute Zorba family initially delighted at the news they've inherited the estate of their recently deceased uncle. The trouble is, the uncle was a ghost collector, and now that he's dead the ghosts are running around the house without supervision. The Zorba family's absentminded professor father (Donald Woods) finds a pair of weird glasses that enables him to see the ghosts. Young son Buck (Charles Herbert) thinks the ghosts are pretty cool, especially the headless lion tamer and his ghost lion. Attractive daughter Medea (Jo Morrow) is marked for death by a flying Ouija board and is later menaced by a shambling corpse. The mother (Rosemary DeCamp) is harassed by poltergeists who throw knives and pots around the kitchen when she's trying to cook dinner. There's also Margaret Hamilton as the witch housekeeper, Martin Milner as the smooth lawyer, and a secret treasure. Robb White wrote the scream-laden screenplay. All in all it's more fun than a barrel of ghost monkeys and perfect Halloween fare for the whole family. The film originally included an introduction and closing speech by Castle, who explained the use of "Ilusion-O," which required a special Ghost Viewer (similar to 3-D glasses) given to theatergoers during the film's original run. During certain scenes, ghosts appeared that could be seen only with the viewer. When the characters onscreen put on their glasses in the film, the audience was supposed to follow suit. For subsequent TV and video versions, all mentions of this ghost-viewer and Illusion-O were removed, though the characters still use the glasses in the film.

13 Ghosts Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) The wires are showing The stuff of sideshow has somehow found its way onto the screen; very young children might be amused, but for others it's more likely that Castle's amateurish, gimmick-dependent spookfest will raise the wrong kind of groan.
The inclusion of two versions of the film seems particularly pointless as the ghosts appear to have made off with
the 'Illusion-O' glasses which should have been provided with the disc.
Otherwise, quality is good and there's a moderate haunting of extra features. Submitted by zunod (Devon, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hot and Cold Poltergeists!!! Moving into a mansion can be hazardous to your health. Even horrifying as one family found out in William Castle's campy horror film, 13 Ghosts! I like this movie because it had all the ingredients perfect for a ghost story. One ghost is too much for me, but 13? The movie was entertaining, scary and it held my interest. Also I liked Margaret Hamilton as the spooky housekeeper, who also played in another movie as a witch. Well you know the movie, or do you? This movie was better than the 2002 remake. William Castle also directed "Bug", but that's another story. This movie was just fun to watch and I really enjoyed it. I added 13 Ghosts (1960) to my library.

As good as it was when I originally saw it in the drive-in Over 40 years later, this movie is very well done. The ghosts were just as scarry today as they were 40 years ago. It had a basic story line but the acting compared to today isn't that good. However, it is worth having in your collection if you are lovers of B rated Science Fiction movies. $10.09 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King ...

$6.55 This delightful gimmick film from producer-director William Castle stars Vincent Price as Dr. Chapin, a scientist who discovers a caterpillarlike parasite that grows in the human spine when someone is afraid and that, unless they scream, can grow large enough to kill them. He solemnly dubs this creature the tingler. Philip Coolidge plays the owner of a nearby cinema who befriends the doctor and whose deaf-mute wife suddenly receives all sorts of shocks, like the sight of a bathtub full of blood with a hand reaching out from it. Since she can't scream, she dies, and Chapin gets his hands on her oversize tingler. ...

$9.69 A meteor crashes in the desert near a small Arizona town, and research scientist John Putnam (Richard Carlson) thinks it's a spaceship, but no one will believe him except his loyal girlfriend, Ellen (Barbara Rush). Weird evidence begins to back up his theory however, from the strange behavior of some of the locals, to the slime trails, the ghostly noises in the phone lines, and the apparitions of hideous alien eyes swooping down on passing cars. Director Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) lets the story unfold deliberately, and infuses the desert locale with all the unearthly mystery of an alien landscape, helping to make this ...
