The Dillards' second album with rock-influenced arrangements was not as barrier-busting as 1968's Wheatstraw Suite, and further removed from their bluegrass roots. However, it was a similarly eclectic and, for the most part, joyous romp through a fusion of bluegrass, rock, folk, and country, with a bit of pop and orchestration along the ride, and the group's superb vocal harmonies being the main constant. "Touch Her If You Can" was the number with the most pop and orchestration, and worked extremely well, with its achingly sad melody. If anything the Dillards did on Elektra could have been a hit single, this would have been a likely candidate. Their unusual a cappella arrangement of the Beatles' "Yesterday" caught some attention, and "Brother John" is another simultaneous detour and highlight, with its Dave Brubeck-influenced jazzy rhythms and guitar picking that recalled the Byrds' psychedelic era. While other tracks, like the bluegrass tune "Old Man at the Mill" and Eric Andersen's "Close the Door Lightly," were more in the standard country-rock mode, they're also good, with the musicians applying care and creative production to the material throughout the disc. ~ Richie Unterberger
An a cappella version of another Beatles tune, 'Yesterday', perked up some ears, and the rest of the album is just as strong. 13 tracks. | | Hobart Smith In Sacred Trust: The 1963 Fleming Brown Tapes CD (2005)
Copperfields music CDs
$14.49 These intimate tracks featuring Hobart Smith playing banjo, guitar, fiddle, and piano were recorded in October, 1963 at Fleming Brown's home in Chicago, and while they were never intended for commercial release, they add up to a well-rounded portrait of this immensely talented old-timey musician. There doesn't seem to have been an instrument that Smith couldn't play (in addition to what he plays here, he also mastered accordion, harmonica, mandolin, and organ), and his repertoire ranged from sacred hymns and Tin Pan Alley classics to the blues and the Appalachian ballads he grew up hearing as a child, all of it delivered with an obvious ...

| | Black Swade CD (2006)
Copperfields album
$16.45 Imagine being 13 and 14 years old, writing and performing a full Hard Rock Album and playing to crowds that cannot believe kids can rock like this! This is the reality for Black Swade, as they have had incredible support and reactions to their debut album. The songs will make every rock fan take notice of this new band from Squamish, BC, Canada. Squamish is a town set in the mountains between Vancouver and Whistler, and is the location where these five friends got together, while all were in elementary school, in June of 2005, to start jamming together. The members of the band are, Liam Alvernini (bass guitar), Luke Kyle (vocals), Iain Rommel (drums), Alex Toews (rhythm guitar) and Scott Verbeek (lead guitar). The opportunities for gigs started weeks after their first practice and have continued to include great venues and enthusiastic crowds, as the word gets out about these "kids" playing crazy hard rock. Squamish gave Black Swade their first opportunity to play in front of a crowd, in July of 2005. People were amazed at the musicianship and more offers to play in Squamish followed. The boys entered a Battle of the Bands in Whistler in March of 2006 and from that performance were asked to play a set at Merlin's Bar in Whistler the following week. From the first song, it was apparent the band had won over the crowd and more offers to play for the apres ski crowd followed. The band recorded a 3 song demo CD in the winter of '06 and was met with great reaction. The band was invited to play for Youth Week at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in May of 2006. Black Swade opened for Free Flow, Canada Day and were the headliner for the Labour Day Celebration in Squamish. Black Swade was voted best local band in October 2006. The band has an exciting CD release party booked at Merlin's opening ...
