What starts out as a weekly anonymous tryst between a divorced man and a married woman turns into a searing portrait of loneliness an emotional need. This film won the Golden Bear for Best Film award at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival where lead actress Kerry Fox also won Best Actress Award. A man wakes in mid-afternoon in a grungy London apartment. A woman knocks at the door. He lets her in, to an awkward silence. She touches his face tenderly--almost immediately they have stripped and are making love on a mattress on the floor. It is the first of many intense, real-time, sexually explicit encounters between Jay (Mark Rylance) and Claire (Kerry Fox). And director Patrice Chéreau reinforces the intensity by keeping his wide-screen camera very close to the actors.
Jay and Claire agree to separate their meetings from the rest of their lives. But after one encounter, Jay follows Claire. He discovers that she acts in a basement theater, and is married to a taxi driver, Andy (Timothy Spall). Following her again, Jay loses her. And, in a reversal of roles--like that in Christopher Nolan's FOLLOWING--when she reemerges from a shop, she follows him. She is amused at first, but is disturbed when he goes to the basement theater.
Using Hanif Kureshi's misogynistic stories as a basis, Chéreau shifts the emphasis from Jay and his pain at separating from his wife. Instead, INTIMACY reveals a woman trying to start feeling again, who is caught between a needy lover and an anguished, insecure husband. Fox gives a fine performance (that won Best Actress at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival) that is the backbone of this powerful drama. Cerebral porn Appause for blurring the lines of celluloid and reality. Everything here, however outrageous is believable. Can't have a better cast, everyone, including the supports hold their own weight. Kerry Fox, you go girl! This chick is Charlotte Rampling, early Helen Mirren and Tilda Swinton - roll into one. Yet another offbeat project and performance to her credit. There could only be one conclusion in this film- it is conclusion-less. Cool British effort, must be in the right mood to watch though. Would give it 31/2 stars actually. Submitted by Hotstar933 (Tristan-Lion City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Naked (Emotional) Truth Patrice Cheareau's film succeeds where several (think Showgirls) have failed in integrating graphic sex in a serious, well-played story. If Mike Leigh made an x-rated movie, it might turn out like this. And even with Mark Rylance and Kerry Fox exposing themselves physically as well as emotionally, Timothy Spall just about steals the show. Brilliant theater for grown-ups only. Rated version suck - Buyer beware !!!!! I have had the opportunity to view the unrated version of this movie , this movie is an excellent movie ,which explores mature themes, however my rating of 1 star is because the rated version have cut out the intensity of several sex scene , and as such ruined the intensity of the message that the director is trying to bring across to the audiences.
Buyers please do not buy the rated version unless you have money to waste Submitted by PMoodley (Gauteng,South Africa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.

Bernardo Bertolucci's THE DREAMERS centers on three university students who adore the Cinematheque Francaise, and are fascinated by '60s culture--the music of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, the films of Jean-Luc Godard, and the writings of Susan Sontag and Chairman Mao. Their philosophical conversations about sexuality, love, politics, activism, and the Vietnam War; and their daily activities--going to the cinema, protesting in support of Henri Langlois, lounging around naked, and smoking dope--are a realistic reflection of the mood and energy of that era.
The plot involves Parisians Theo (Louis Garrel) ...

$9.79 Vincent Gallo shocked the 2003 Cannes Film Festival with this highly personal film that he wrote, directed, produced, edited, photographed, and stars in. Gallo plays Bud Clay, a motorcycle racer on his way from New Hampshire to California in a van. The cross-country trip includes stops at a gas station, where Clay meets and falls for a gas station attendant named Violet (Anna Vareschi); a roadside food stand, where he meets the sadly beautiful Lilly (Cheryl Tiegs, making her feature-film debut); and the Las Vegas strip, where he picks up local prostitute Rose (Elizabeth Blake). As he comes into contact with these women, he can't let go of his past, which centers around Daisy (Chloe Sevigny), whom he hopes to find when he returns home to Los Angeles.
Nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, THE BROWN BUNNY is a poignant, emotional drama that features long scenes with little or no dialogue, as Gallo uses ...

$16.89 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt ...
