Ikiru Movie Review One of the best films ever This is an early Kurosawa film and it is perhaps his best, second only to Seven Samurai at worst.
Beautiful, perfectly-paced, haunting this is the story of a man with just a short time to live. After a lifetime of futility he decides to make one last act of meaningfulness. A heartbreaker of a film and opne you just can't miss. Submitted by desertgrj (Valley of the Sun) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Evocative, provocative I first saw this movie as a teenage and now, decades later, I still hum the songs. What Kurosawa does with the facial expressions of his characters
far surpasses what the mere words of most "actors" today evince.
This is one of the "deepest" movies ever made, yet with humor and pathos mixed in such a delectable mix as only a few others, like Shakespeare, have
ever hitherto been able to manifest.
This is The Masterpiece by The Master of Modern Cinema.
This is no "action-packed" film. Yet,
it is the most action you will probably see in a film: the action of a soul and the actions deriving from that action.
Black and white on the surface but more color than you could ever evince out of those million pixel computer screens. Submitted by judahis (Chattanooga, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

| | One Night At Mccool's DVD (2001) Widescreen
Ikiru review
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, ...

Ikiru DVD
$31.25 Akira Kurosawa's highly acclaimed film, set in feudal Japan, presents an intriguing tale of violent crime in the woods, told from the perspective of four different characters--a bandit (Toshirô Mifune), a woman (Machiko Kyô), her husband (Masayuki Mori), and a woodcutter (Takashi Shimura). Only two things about the incident seem to be clear--the woman was raped and her husband is now dead. However, the other elements radically differ as the four participants and/or witnesses relate their own stories (with the dead man, eerily enough, speaking through a medium). As each account is revealed, what seemed black and white turns to various hues of gray, leading to surprising--and confounding--relevations.
A landmark of international cinema, RASHOMON won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1951, bringing both Kurosawa--and Japanese film in general--to the attention of Western audiences. From the rain-soaked opening sequence to its ...

$31.25 Akira Kurosawa's stunning reconception of Shakespeare's MACBETH is a dark samurai drama, set in feudal Japan. As the film begins, two soldiers--Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki)--find themselves lost in a dense forest during a powerful thunderstorm. Seemingly unable to leave the woods, they encounter a ghostly old woman who predicts that Washizu will soon rise to power. At the goading of his ruthless wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), Washizu embarks on a murderously ambitious path and quickly fulfills the prophecy. However, his ascension is cursed by his brutal actions and soon opposition arises to challenge his blood-stained rule.
One of the finest Shakespeare adaptations to appear in any medium, ...

$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering ...
