Soundtrack English Released just a few years before a similar British film, ZULU, this 1962 English gladiator film depicts the tiny army of Sparta and their efforts to stave off an attack by Persian forces which greatly outnumbered the Spartans. Led by King Leonidis (Richard Egan), the Spartans army consisted primarily of a security force who guarded the palace. This rousing gladiator epic boasts an incredible cast including Diane Baker, Ralph Richardson, and Kieron Moore. 300 Spartans Reviews: "[D]irector Rudy Mate gets points for casting Sir Ralph Richardson as voice of democracy Themistocles..."

The script writters and directors could had made a better work here too. With some little touches this movie could had earned some oscars. Leonidas means 'Lion'. This is an absolutely superb W/S DVD release of one of the best 60's historical mini epics of all time. Made in 1962, this tells the story of the heroic stand of THE 300 SPARTANS led by their beloved King Leonidas (played with gusto by the excellent Richard Egan).
It's 480 B.C. and King Xerxes (played with superb deft slyness by the great David Farrar) invades Greece with an uncountable amount of Persian soldiers. They capture a Spartan called Agathon (John Crawford) who for refusing to talk is forced to brave death but is then spared and released in order to spread fear amongst the Greeks for what enemy forces he has seen with his own eyes ("they're drinking the rivers dry!").
Back on the political scene, the Greeks meet to discuss as to how they are to deal with the Persians.Thomistocles the Athenian, (played by top thespian actor Sir Ralph Richardson)wants a 'united' stand by all Greeks, whereas Lawrence Naismith (later to star in 'Jason & the Argonauts), wants Greece to stand against the Persians as independant States.
The Spartans take the lead in uniting the Greeks by sending a vanguard (King Leonidas' own personal bodyguards who are not accountable to the decisions of the political council) to guard the pass of Thermopyle. They are helped by other Greeks including Thespians troops and other troops from Phosis.
The first attack is during the night by the Spartans and they almost capture and kill Xerxes. Leonidas then discoveres that his troops will not be coming to reinforce him from Sparta after all.
The real battles then begin and the Spartans repel and defeat three seperate Persian attacks including the anihilation of the Persian 'Immortals' who are humiliatingly cut to ribbons in a fiercely depicted battle scene.
Just when things are looking good, the heroic Greeks are betrayed by an irritating goater (played by Kieran Moore) who sells the information that he has overheard concerning a path which would trap Leonidas and his troops to Xerxes for gold.
The Spartans are warned and Leonidas dispels the Greek troops and then goes after Xerxes knowing that they are all doomed to die. Leonidas is killed and the brave Spartans finally surrounded and offered the chance of saving themselves if they surrender Leonidas' body. They refuse and are finished off with arrows.
Everything about this film is excellent. Manos Hadjidakis' film score is top class, the technicolor and contrast of the Spartan 'reds' and the Persian 'blacks' never bettered as a difference between fighting troops. The performances are solid, of those not already mentioned there is Donald Houston as 'Hedarnies', Barry Coe as a young brave Spartan called 'Philon' and Diane Baker as 'Hellas' (an obvious symbolism of Greece being 'beautiful'), as well as others (the old goater man is a good laugh).
This DVD version is uncut and restores everything that was lost on tv airings of the film. There is not much in way of bonus material except trailers and tv spots.
Highly recommended and thoroughly enjoyable.

Weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis), the two-faced former owner of the Ring that Frodo must destroy in the fires of Mount Doom. Meanwhile Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) contend with the deranged ruler Denethor (John Noble) at the once-mighty city of Minas Tirith, as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) joins Éowyn (Miranda Otto) and the Riders of Rohan to hold back the forces of Sauron. ...

$7.85 Steven Soderbergh followed up his critical and commercial smash ERIN BROCKOVICH with this wildly exhilarating exploration of the complex, multilayered international drug problem. The film tells three seemingly disparate stories that loosely intersect and overlap, unfurling at a frantic, relentless pace. In the first, a well-intentioned Mexican police officer, Javier Rodriguez Rodriguez (Benicio Del Toro), comes face-to-face with the hypocrisy ...

300 Spartans review
$18.39 UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION: Bloodthirsty vengeance is measured out in buckets, not spoonfuls for this hard-hitting vampire movie sequel. The story picks up right where the first UNDERWORLD left off, in the midst of a war between Lycans (werewolves) and vampires, with the gorgeous death-dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), on the run with her vamp-wolf hybrid lover, Michael (Scott Speedman). This go-'round, there are flashbacks to three centuries earlier and the separation of two ultra-bad brothers, one vampire and one Lycan. The Lycan gets locked in a hidden tomb/prison and the feud begins. In the present, the winged vamp brother Marcus (Tony Curran) is determined to find his Lycan sibling and free him, which would wreak unimaginable havoc on the world. Selene's got to stop it, and the result is mayhem, with great gun battles, bashings and hackings, mysterious artifacts, orgies, and sneaking around in the dripping-wet crypts and catacombs. Beckinsale looks great with her jet-black hair, skintight leather bodysuit, red lips, and glowing blue eyes. Director Len Wiseman obviously has a great love for this alternate universe; he keeps the action humming, the blood running, and the cast well-stocked with seasoned British actors like Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, and Steven Mackintosh. The sex and violence may still be a bit intense for youngsters, but for the vampire crowd, it's a moveable feast of generous, still-twitching proportions.
THE GRUDGE: A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director, Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly ...
