From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt) who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that they protect they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind. Runtime: 132 minutes. Unrated.

Based on the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Guillermo del Toro's gleefully eccentric film follows the supernatural adventures of Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a cigar-chomping, horn-filing demonic hero enlisted by an occult scholar (John Hurt) to fight evil in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Along with the fire-throwing Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and the amphibious psychic Abe Sapien (Doug Jones, with the voice of David Hyde Pierce), Hellboy is joined by new recruit John Myers (Rupert Evans), a squeaky-clean FBI agent assigned to keep the big red devil's exploits in check. Things get out of hand, however, when a vicious monster is unleashed by the villainous Rasputin (Karl Roden), leading to events that may set off an apocalyptic nightmare for humanity. Echoing Peter Jackson's passion for THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, HELLBOY is a labor of love from del Toro, a longtime fan of the comic and its creator. The director's enthusiasm shows, since HELLBOY is a wondrously strange slice of pulpy adventure, mixed with horror and humor, and enhanced by stunning visual effects. In the title role (and lots of red makeup), Perlman is pitch-perfect, giving the good-natured misfit a powerful--yet surprisingly sensitive--presence. Blair, Evans, Hurt, and other actors are similarly well cast, rounding out an ensemble intent on retaining the movie's dark yet superbly entertaining tone.

Theatrical Release: APRIL 2, 2004

5 stars Have Some Fun
If you can't have fun with this movie, you never liked comic books and thought SF movies were a waste of time. Ron Perlman is so spot on with this role, you can't wait for the next action scene to see what he is capable of smashing, trashing, or setting on fire. Like Arnold, you believe he can do this stuff. The cigar was a great touch, and the junk food. More HellBoy!

4 stars Hellishly good
Excellent movie! I've not read the comics (not a fan of comics) so I really can't comment on how faithfully it represents the original comics but this film stands up on its own merits. There's a nearly coherent plot without TOO many holes (though some aspects could benefit from a little more explanation) which is a pleasant change these days. It's well acted, well produced and doesn't rely totally on its special effects for its impact.

5 stars Pretty darn good!
First of all... great makeup, special effects, and animatronics. And yes, some of Hellboy's dialog is a bit cheesy. But, that's what makes it great, cause it kind of reminded me of Evil Dead a bit. I enjoyed Hellboy and highly recommend it. So, check it out!

5 stars del Toro Gets It Right
What a fun ride this movie is. Ron Perlman as Hellboy is spot on, infusing what is essentially an alien creature with wit and humanity. Selma Blair is perfect as the love interest who still maintains her own identity. Never a dull moment.

The lovely Milla Jovovitch is back with a vengeance as amnesiac, genetically-altered zombie ass-kicker, Alice, in this sequel to the 2002 hit film, which is based on the video game. This time around the sinister Umbrella Corporation sends a team of investigators into their destroyed underground lab (the ground-zero of carnage in the previous film) and unwittingly unleash the still-staggering zombies and monsters out into the population of Raccoon City. Soon Umbrella has evacuated all of their own key employees and has shut everyone else inside to be devoured. A mastermind chemist's daughter gets left behind in the confusion, and she is the one ticket out for Alice and a handful of dwindling survivors, including the equally hot, skimpily dressed, and almost-as-tough lady cop, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). There's some nifty motorcycle riding, plenty of bullets and splattering blood, and even a new monster--the hulking, heavily-armored, seriously ugly Nemesis. Comic actor Mike Epps is great as a pimped-out hustler who handles the whole dead-coming-back-to-life thing with cool nonchalance. In some ways, this nonstop creep show is even an improvement over the original, with a pervasive mood of nihilistic corporate dehumanization adding extra concern about the future of civilization to the mix of shooting, dying, punching, and munching. After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility ...

Follow-up to the first PS2 Fullmetal Alchemist game --- 2003's Tobenai Tenshi (Broken Angel). Hagane no Renkinjutsushi 2 continues on the action-RPG roots of the previous title but improves over the predecessor with new features and gameplay elements. The story once again focuses on main character Edward Elric. This time around, Square Enix is starting the story off from the first chapter of the original Fullmetal Alchemist cartoon, but plenty of original scenarios are planned as well. Animated sequences feature heavily in the game, playing during major story sequences. Teamwork with Al once again takes a central role in this title. As with the original, you direct Al using the R1 shoulder button. However, this time around, Al automatically chooses the most appropriate action for you depending on the situation. The story begins in Lior a desert city that Edward and Alphonse visit in the first episode of the animated series. As the brothers are unveiling the secrets of a cult called Leto they are attacked by shadowy creatures from the unknown. Meanwhile a frightening phenomenon is sweeping the country; people in many regions are vanishing without a trace. In Resembool ...

Michael Bay, the master of the big-budget blockbuster, directs this action film that is packed with emotion. With a planet-killing asteroid on a collision course with Earth, it's up to a motley crew of scientists and oil drillers (yes, oil drillers) to save the earth. With 18 days to impact, a team from NASA (led by Billy Bob Thornton) frantically tries to find a solution but ends up turning to an outside contractor. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his team of oilmen are called upon to save the planet as only they can. ARMAGEDDON may boast impressive special effects, but it's the cast--including Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, and Owen Wilson--that gives the film its humor and heart. Tyler's father Steven Tyler and his band Aerosmith contributed the Oscar-nominated hit "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" to the soundtrack. From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed "Pearl Harbor" and "The Rock" (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- "Armageddon!" Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis ("Die Hard") Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck ("Good Will Hunting") and Billy Bob Thornton ("Sling Blade") Liv Tyler ("Inventing The Abbotts") Steve Buscemi ("Con Air") and Will Patton ("Inventing The Abbotts") ...

For his third feature film, British director Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY) turns to the pages of Anthony Swofford's 2003 book on his experiences in the first Gulf War, and enlists William Broyles Jr.--a former Lieutenant who fought in Vietnam--to convert it into a screenplay. Mendes's film strays into FULL METAL JACKET territory as it opens, with young recruit Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) undertaking some rigorous basic training under the steely, watchful eye of Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx). Impressed, Sykes invites Swofford to join his team, and partners him with Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), ultimately taking them to Saudi Arabia to fight in the first Gulf War. But once they arrive in the punishing heat of the desert, the long wait for battle sends many of the Marines dangerously close to the brink of insanity. Drawing on the experience of acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) to help viewers get a close-up taste of the Marines' punishing life in the desert, Mendes's film enters into deeply unsettling territory, the likes of which many cinemagoers won't have experienced since Martin Sheen lost his tenuous grip on reality in APOCALYPSE NOW. Indeed, Mendes deploys a few similar tactics to those that made Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film so effective: a hip soundtrack that uses songs from artists as varied as Public Enemy and the ...

Richard Price's novel FREEDOMLAND is brought to life in this 2006 adaptation. A carjacking-turned-kidnapping provides the set-up for a complex story of racial and class divide, as black detective Lorenzo Council (Samuel L. Jackson) attempts to uncover the truth in victim Brenda Martin's story. Bleeding and dazed in an inner city ER, Brenda (Julianne Moore) explains that on her way home from work in the projects of fictional Dempsey, New Jersey, a black man assaulted her and stole her car. Matters are intensified when it's revealed that her 4-year-old son was asleep in the backseat. Novelist Price (CLOCKERS), who also wrote the screenplay, has never shied away from the blunt realities and moral ambiguities of the contemporary urban experience. Though Price's vision is often unrelentingly bleak, and his characters are far from saintly , there's a weary hopefulness that birddogs them throughout. Stars Jackson and Moore turn in performances as incendiary as the film's subject, and the excellent supporting cast (Edie Falco and Anthony Mackie, among them) tackles these complex characters with both nuance and fire. Director Joe Roth (CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS) is given the monumental task of bringing Price's epic to the screen and his visual approach works well--all cinematic chiaroscuro and icy hues. Still, Price's themes of racial and class tension are rough, murky waters and require both a bold vision and a deft touch. As much as Roth is clearly passionate about the task at hand--setting an emotional fever pitch from the word go--the hopeful resolution he desires is not so easily attained, if attainable at all. FREEDOMLAND is a tough one, and although flawed, in the end, it's an emotionally complex, politically provocative film worth viewing. Based on the best-selling novel by Richard Price ...
