Fans of the insular Joss Whedon sci-fi Western Firefly have been clamoring for a soundtrack since the series premiered in 2002. Composer Greg Edmonson's genre-bending experiment in orchestral country music struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. It was a maverick score for an even more maverick television show. Ironically, Firefly gained the majority of its momentum in the wake of its cancellation. Fueled in part by an extremely vocal fan base, Whedon took the good ship Serenity to the big screen in 2005, but tapped composer David Newman to replace Edmonson. Newman's rich score hinted at the renegade sprit of the series, but its ten-gallon hat was perpetually tipped toward the kind of big, brassy Hollywood bombast that permeates the action/adventure genre. Edmonson's vision for the show mirrored Whedon's, as evidenced by the twangy theme song, written by Whedon and sung by Sonny Rhodes. Firefly's fiddles, dobros, and banjos gave outer space the kind of regional familiarity usually reserved for golden mesas and tumbleweed-adorned juke joints. The fact that it was supposed to occur 500 years into the future just made it all the more exotic. Edmonson found endless ways to work American, Irish, and even Middle Eastern folk music into a show about galactic outlaws, and now, thanks to the fans and the folks at Varese Sarabande, the rest of the world can go along for the ride. ~ James Christopher Monger Firefly Soundtrack Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Superb music for the short-lived series When I watched "Firefly", the 13-episode cancelled series from Joss Whedon, on DVD, the music definitely stood out. I had been hoping for a score CD, and here it is! Most of the series' themes are here, with their mix of Eastern and (literally) Western (a.k.a. horse opera) sounds. This disc also stands by itself without the visuals as an enjoyable listen. "Serenity", the movie, has a good score, but this one for the TV series is a GREAT one. I wish the series could have gone on, and that we could have had more music in this superb vein. Submitted by markz (Plano, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Loved It This cd is a must have for any fan of Firefly. It is only missing one thing, The Ballad of Jayne. Besides that, it's a wonderful instrumental album. The only song that has lyrics is the theme song. I highly recommend. Submitted by faith_and_trust (Moline, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Firefly TV Soundtrack If you're a fan of the show, then I really don't need to say much other than buy this CD.
It's not a complete soundtrack for every episode, but it has music from select episodes and the exellent theme song.
However, it's very country (Firefly is a western-themed show after all) but with a hit of the orient blended in. A very different, but enjoyable sound.
I would have given this CD 5 Stars but it was lacking one song. The Hero of Canton is not on the CD. An oversight to be sure but perhaps one that will be corrected in the future. Submitted by Eric (Livonia, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
