Recording information: 60 Psycho Hum Studios, Medford, OR; Jupiter Studios, Seattle, WA; Red Room Recorders, Tampa, FL; Studio Litho, Seattle, WA. Reigning kings of the early-2000s metal resurgence, Atlanta's Mastodon expertly blended vintage speed-metal riffage, stoner rock's sludgy power, and prog's vision and scope on 2004's acclaimed LEVIATHAN. The band returns even stronger on their 2006 major label debut, BLOOD MOUNTAIN. The quartet's playing remains unquestionably tight, as fierce solos overlay colossal riffs, which are anchored by a rhythm section that is fluid when necessary (as on the ambient prog-metal of "Sleeping Giant") and lock-step perfect when the orders for speed and power are sent down from on high (see "Bladecatcher"). While BLOOD MOUNTAIN is purportedly a concept album (loosely built around the idea of being lost and doomed and at nature's mercy in the great wild, as opposed to LEVIATHAN's overt Moby Dick theme) it's difficult to decipher a clear narrative from the scorched-earth vocals. Nonetheless, a classical sense of grandiosity pervades the album, as the lightning intensity and sheer power of the music take the listener on a bewildering journey. But remain calm, dear listener: Mastodon will get you to the top of the mountain--bloody and beaten, but altogether satisfied. The two-year long wait is over, and those Mastodon fans encouraged but leery of the slicker production of Leviathan over Remission will be even more bemused, or downright bewildered, by Blood Mountain, the band's first foray into major-label territory since signing with Warner Brothers' Reprise imprint (after all, this was the label conceded to Frank Sinatra as his own when he threatened to leave it). Blood Mountain is everything fans both hoped for and feared. Mastodon has dug even deeper in its foray into prog metal, but without losing an ounce of their power, literacy, or willingness to indulge in hardcore punk, doom, and death metal. Like Leviathan, Blood Mountain is both melodic and downright raging in places. Matt Bayles is in the producer's chair once more and he's encouraged this Georgia quartet -- Bränn Dailor (drums), Brent Hinds (guitar and vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar and vocals), and Troy Sanders (bass and vocals) -- to take it to the limit. And they have. Blood Mountain indulges and goes deep into the territory of prog metal beats and quests and spiritual revelations that have less to do with Tolkein-ism and more to do with Conan-ism. There are utterly beautiful melodic passages woven into the heaviness that are reminiscent of Thin Lizzy's dual guitar lyricism -- and the band has confessed to digging Phil Lynott and company. The vocals -- with guest spots from Neurosis' Scott Kelly, the Mars Volta's Cedric Bixler-Zavala, and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme -- are mixed way upfront and the number of sheer stylistic changes is dizzying. No, Mastodon should not lose their street cred over this. For every old fan alienated, a new one will step into the gap and there will be throngs of new ones, more than likely. Why? Simply because this band does the technical thing as well or better than Meshuggah without sacrificing a bit of the black blood which courses through their veins toward their dark thrash metal hearts. The set opens with the completely in-the-red thrashcore metal of "The Wolf Is Loose," complete with a chanted chorus. As the guitars twin and scream, bass and drums chop away at convention. Tempo changes, from fast to faster to a refrainRolling Stone (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Melody matters as much as mayhem, and the treacherous temp shifts are navigated brilliantly by drummer Brann Dailor..." Rolling Stone (p.103) - Ranked #9 in Rolling Stone's "The Top 50 Albums Of 2006" -- "[They] leap between math-prog tempo shifts without losing their sense of primal paranoid thunder." Entertainment Weekly (p.81) - "Major-label metal hasn't sounded this hungry since Metallica got haircuts." -- Grade: B Q (p.144) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[C]onsisting of relentless time changes...[and] vocals that veer from unintelligible roar to choral chant....Exhilarating." Uncut (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "A crushing heaviness grounded in classic hardcore and grind meets the drumming of Brann Dailor..." Alternative Press (p.p.206) - "BLOOD MOUNTAIN finds Mastodon neck-deep in the primordial ooze, ascending to a very literal artistic peak by album's end." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.69) - Ranked #5 in Kerrang's "20 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "[They] continue to dazzle and confuse everyone with their staggering reinvention of heavy music's fundamental principles." Amazing, but short of greatness. Leviathan is the best one.
Check out between tracks 5 and 8. 'Wolf is Loose' is the single off this CD. Badaboom, badabing! Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
the ship of freaks returns to port Well, the ship of freaks returns to port Mongoloid in search of all that is suitable for a porta-potty carnival event and this time, the Shrek-like riffs gargle, froth, and bubble up faster than Spewing Man swallowing his dry scaled fish tail tongue. Inventive like Voivod, abstract like Tool, heavy and manic like Slayer, rumbling like Motorhead, forced like Entombed psychological like Katatonia , and percussive like no other band I have heard before, Mastodon, freakish though their sound & imagery may be, has truly fashioned a boundary-expanding brand of intellectually brutal metal. Sporting one of the busiest drummers on the planet, Mastodon's latest features the fierce, maniacal leanings of the debut and the more accomplished & varied patterning of the second leaving their rabidly infected audience with a third helping of galloping, stampeding studio wizardry that is as much impressive as it is unnerving. For those about to rock, this will pound your failing senses tin foil flat and that's no chicken-of-the-sea fish tale.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Submitted by Cameron (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bastard Child of Metallica and Corrosion of Conformity Mastodon's major-label debut is nothing short of brilliant. Stoner-rock, prog, evolved thrash; call it what you will but Blood Mountain is a majestic and crushing modern metal album. Only Lamb of God's recently released Sacrament can rival this for American metal album of the year. Incidentally, the review submitted previously by The Trooper is very funny and very well written. Kudos to you my metal brother. Submitted by steverazorberry (Dallas, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Major label release with major experimentation A lot of fans might have expected Mastodon to sell out and take their sludge-vs.-thrash style to a mainstream channel on Blood Mountain, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In a surprising turn, the band's sound and songwriting is actually more experimental than ever on this 2006 LP, but with great results. The band hasn't given an inch of their heaviness or knack for songwriting ("Crystal Skull", "Circle Cysquatch"), but have also indulged their prog side ("Capillarean Crest", "Bladecatcher"), making an album that is refreshing but not altogether unexpected. If you liked the direction the band faced with Leviathan, than chances are Blood Mountain will not let you down. This record is a true rarity: a truly heavy album with enough variety in textures, songs, and moods to keep it interesting throughout, and intriguing for listen after listen. Highly recommended.
