Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Spanish Subtitles; French Subtitles; Blue Ray HD-DVD With only one film under his belt and the endorsement of Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth became a virtual horror brand with HOSTEL (2005), a yarn about a group of thrill-seeking American college dudes backpacking through Europe, only to be seduced into a Slovakian money-for-torture ring where they become the prey. The sequel begins right where that film left off, filling us in on the whereabouts of lone survivor Paxton (Jay Hernandez)---but before long, we see that gender roles are reversed and we are traveling with sensible Beth (Lauren German), hedonistic Whitney (Bijou Phillips), and virginal Lorna (Heather Matarazzo). After tussling with a gaggle of shifty men on a train, they meet Axelle (Vera Jordanova), a gorgeous woman who persuades them to follow her to a rejuvenating spa in Slovakia.
As the trio checks into the same infamous hostel, Roth shows us the inner workings of the previously mysterious torture club. Once the girls are put up on the auction block, online bidding begins among the club's members--who are revealed to be prominent international businesspeople. After Beth and Whitney are won by type-A American corporate jerk Todd (Richard Burgi), who believes that killing someone will give him power, and his reluctant associate, Stuart (Roger Bart), the film shifts to the preparations for their inaugural slayings within the bloody walls of the warehouse. For those who embraced HOSTEL's abrupt tonal shifts and very realistic gore, Roth serves up amplified doses of both in his follow-up. Astute horror fans will find a few amusing in-jokes among the carnage, but beware---things get incredibly strong, and Roth's charnelhouse chic intends to offend. In fact, HOSTEL II may stand as the most glaring example of the MPAA's bias in favor of violence over sexuality when it comes the boundary between R and NC-17. Hostel 2 Movie Review very good I loved the twist at the end. Very good Part 2, which we all know that's rare in the horror movies Submitted by rhasanwhite (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A good sequel but still dissapointing This movie starts off where the last one ended with Jay Hernandez's character. Here is where the problems started. I felt that if Eli was going in the direction he went then he should of had a more elaborate killing for Paxton besides him getting his head cut off. I think eli uses heads being cut off way to much and it just isnt scary or gory. The rest of the movie was pretty good with the dual stories. I loved the fact that you get an inside look into the minds of the people willing to do this. The girls story line was okay and was, for the most part, well acted. The torture scenes were either a hit or a miss because they either went all out and showed everything (which is what i like to see when i go see an R rated horror film) or they dont show everything. The ending was okay but wasnt as amazing as it was hyped up to be. All in all, this was a good movie and deffinately worth seeing but i felt that the first was a better entry from Eli Roth Submitted by dketcherside (Imperial) Was This Review Helpful? Good on gross factor, not much else This sequel, while surprisingly more interesting than its predecessor, gets high marks from me on just the gross factor. The scene where "Lorna" gets cut up was pretty shocking I thought. The problem I have with this movie, though, is that the plot is really not plausible when you think about it. The "heronie" of the movie, if you want to think of her that way, we come to find out is loaded with money which is why she can buy her way out at the end. Let's think about this for a moment...if you're a rich young woman touring around Europe, wouldn't you have the ways and means to put yourself and your friends up in a nice expensive, posh hotel where you wouldn't, you know, risk getting killed or anything? Or would you go to some lousy hostel instead? My guess would be the former. Furthermore, how did this woman go from being a victim to becoming so blood thirsty in such a short time? I understand she wanted out, but still...beheading another innocent person? Seems a little hard to swallow if you ask me. At least in the case of those who have paid money to come there and murder someone, we know they're just sick in the first place. Nice twist? Yeah maybe. Differentiated from the first one? Yeah...but not very believeable. If you like gross movies, I'd recommend this one. Otherwise, don't bother. Submitted by David (CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Great Hostel 2 is a great film and it delivers quite a bit of gore aswell, I would say it was a lot better than the first and an enjoyable film. Hope Hostel 3 is ever planned. Submitted by burninhell95 (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
