Bill Evans - Waltz For Debby Album Track Listing

| Quintessential Art of a Jazz Trio. Don't know why Riverside put this out as Waltz for Debby and a separate LP (now CD) as Sunday at the Village Vanguard. They are both Sunday... same date. Sadly, the bassist died not long after this show, leaving us with a singular live recording. That said, let it be known that whether you like Bill Evans or not, this is one incredible show. This trio levitates, floats, and flies as they improvise together (as one) as no other I've ever heard. Though the songs are not new, this date sure was and I'd say buy the other 1/2 of this show (Sunday at the Village Vanguard) before the couple others this trio recorded i.e. "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" and "Explorations" Also, know that sadly it was never the same for Evans. Great as he his playing was, he seldom, if ever, rose above the trio music he made here. Many fans tired of his - let's call it floating chord styling - and his career was sadly an unhappy downhill slide for Evans personally. I say this keeping in mind that, if you love his playing, and I do, there is scarcely a CD you would dislike by Bill Evans. They just aren't as good as 'Waltz for Debby" aka "Sunday at the Village Vanguard". R.Braun By rbbraun49 (Madison, Wi) This review is for a different format. |
