Like many AMERICAN IDOL contestants before him, singer Phil Stacey landed a recording contract after being eliminated in the latter rounds of the show (in this case the sixth season). The resulting 2008 debut is a pristine country-rocker with crunchy guitars and pop hooks galore that, on first blush, could pass for a collection of stadium rock anthems. There's no mistaking the honky-tonk twang in Stacey's voice, though, and the songs, some of them provided by country hit-makers Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher, are a fine example of the contemporary Nashville sound.
Born in Kentucky, Stacey is the son of a minister who was enlisted in the Navy when he auditioned for Idol, and during that very audition his wife gave birth to their second daughter -- in other words, he seemed to cover all the crucial bases of country music, from love of God and family to love of his country. Produced by Wayne Kirkpatrick -- a professional songwriter and producer who has helmed albums by Amy Grant, Little Big Town, Wynonna Judd, and Michael W. Smith -- Phil Stacey wisely opts out of hardcore country in favor of a crossover sound heavily inspired by Rascal Flatts, whose leader, Gary LeVox, co-wrote the first single here, "If You Didn't Love Me." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Among the greatest fallacies perpetuated by the producers and judges of American Idol is the idea that sixth-season contestant Phil Stacey is some kind of country singer. Nothing in Stacey's early performances suggested that he had a familiarity with country music -- he seemed more comfortable singing Edwin McCain than he did LeAnn Rimes -- but he was easily categorized, so when country week finally rolled around, the show shoved him into that box, based more on his background than his talents. Born in Kentucky, Stacey is the son of a minister who was enlisted in the Navy when he auditioned for Idol, and during that very audition his wife gave birth to their second daughter -- in other words, he seemed to cover all the crucial bases of country music, from love of God and family to love of his country. The only thing is, Stacey had absolutely no feel for country music, not even country-pop, a problem that's far too glaring on his eponymous 2008 major-label debut. Produced by Wayne Kirkpatrick -- a professional songwriter and producer who has helmed albums by Amy Grant, Little Big Town, Wynonna Judd, and Michael W. Smith -- Phil Stacey wisely opts out of hardcore country in favor of a crossover sound heavily inspired by Rascal Flatts, whose leader, Gary LeVox, co-wrote the first single here, "If You Didn't Love Me." Such an emphasis on pop would seem to be an ideal situation for Stacey, but even in this slick setting -- heavy ballads and inoffensive pop tunes that feel like ballads even if the tempo is a little faster -- he can't pull it off as he's not a country singer, he's a glee-club singer posing as country. His voice is too high and smooth, he over-enunciates the lyrics, and he's too earnest, overselling the lyrics, which only emphasizes how calculated the album is, how it has a song for the family, a song for God, a song for the troops, hitting all the bases that make Phil Stacey easy to market as a country singer, at least according to the laws of Idol. Throughout it all, Stacey hardly comes across as a bad guy -- there's a certain naïve sweetness behind his overly coached performances -- but that only makes the record harder to take because its failure isn't on his shoulders, it's on the music biz machine itself, the people who should have known better than to try to turn this guy next door into the star he so clearly isn't. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

5 stars FANTASTIC PROJECT!!!
All I can say about this CD is that it is FANTASTIC. Every song is good, and Phil's voice fits the songs like the proverbial hand and glove. I was NOT a fan of Phil's when he was on AI, yet something led me to buy this CD. I am SO GLAD I DID! It is really, really, really, really.... VERY GOOD!

Tender Explorations
Bill Mize Tender Explorations CD  (1993)

Phil Stacey
CD $15.19
Mize has perfected his technique and greatly improved his compositional skills, leading to a collection that is gorgeous and compelling. While the overall mood of the album is thoughtful and provocative, "The Road Scholar" provides an upbeat, exciting tune to begin the album, and its driving joyfulness makes it one of Mize's most rewarding compositions. "Freefall," which Mize describes as the soundtrack to a meteor shower, also demonstrates his ability to play upbeat, melodic tunes without sounding rushed or forced. The other songs tend to be quieter, beautifully evoking scenes from Mize's Appalachian home with melodies that are simple yet memorable. Mize uses a variety of techniques to develop these songs, and is particularly adept at the use of harmonics to color his work. This is particularly evident on a nice cover of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" and the driving, turbulent "Miasma," the darkest piece on the collection. Mize includes guest musicians Ed Gerhard and Martha Jacobs on three pieces, and his ...

Remastered German issue.
A fine songwriter and gifted singer with charisma to burn, Jimmy Cliff is one of the most talented musicians to come out of Jamaica. His best work was done with legendary producer Leslie Kong, and several of those songs are available here, including "Wonderful World Beautiful People," "You Can Get It if You Really Want It," "Many Rivers to Cross," and "Vietnam," all of which are indispensable classics. Following Kong's death in 1971, Cliff seemed to lose his focus and drifted in and out of different styles, never quite finding his earlier touch. While he is too good a performer to ever be less than professional, the second half of this disc doesn't quite match up to the material done with Leslie Kong. ~ Steve Leggett
Although Jamaica's Jimmy Cliff has had a long and continuing career on the international scene with his thoughtful and infectious brand of reggae-pop, his best work was undoubtedly done in the late '60s and early '70s, the period covered by this collection. Everything that is absolutely essential is here, from his breakthrough hit, 1969's "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" (inspired by Cliff's appearance at the 1968 International Song Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), ...
