Nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, this $117.5 million-grossing hit stars Ellen Page as a pregnant teenager trying to find caring adoptive parents (Jason Batman, Jennifer Garner). Bonuses: commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, cast and crew jam, screen tests; BD also has premiere footage and casting session. The word "quirky" has become the quick and easy way to describe films such as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL that straddle the lines between indie and studio films and comedy and drama. While JUNO fits into that same category, this distinctive dramedy is in a class all its own. Ellen Page (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) stars as Juno, a witty teenage girl whose boredom doesn't lead her to the mall. Instead, she makes a one-time trip into the arms of her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). When Juno discovers that she's pregnant, she's forced to grow up fast as she tries to find adoptive parents for her quickly growing child.
JUNO might have a lot of strengths--Page's award-worthy performance, a pitch-perfect soundtrack, excellent direction from Jason Reitman--but it's the screenwriting debut of writer Cody Diablo that makes this such a winning film. Famous for her blog and her book CANDY GIRL: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF AN UNLIKELY STRIPPER, Diablo has a unique voice and an incredible ear for dialogue. But even the nearly perfect script wouldn't sound so good if it weren't for the talents of these actors, particularly Page. She won raves for her first major role in HARD CANDY, but this performance proves it wasn't a fluke. The rest of the cast, especially J.K. Simmons as Juno's dad, is just as worthy of attention. JUNO continues Cera's cinematic ascent after his success with the hit comedy SUPERBAD, and his ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT costar Jason Bateman uses his dry delivery to great effect as a potential parent for Juno's baby. Songs from Kimya Dawson perfectly capture the film's tone with the music's sweet, smart, and funny sounds. Theatrical Release: December 5, 2007
Juno Reviews: "[There's] room for the deeper emotional lives of all these characters to emerge. They do so beautifully, achingly, artfully."-- Susan Green, Box Office "[The film] takes on surprising delicacy and emotional depth. The snappy one-liners are a brilliant distraction, Ms. Cody's way of clearing your throat for the lump you're likely to find there in the movie's last scenes."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times 4 stars out of 4 -- "JUNO, a likably cynical comedy, is actually about hope....A film bristling with vitality and heart....JUNO is charming, honest and terrifically acted."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The devil in Cody's script lets in wit, anger, distress and the pain of romantic longing. JUNO is more than a few smiles -- it makes you laugh deeply. It's one from the bruised heart."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Jennifer Garner has never been lovelier or more affecting....Delightful and good-hearted..." -- Grade: A--- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "JUNO is hilarious an sweet-tempered, perceptive and surprisingly grounded. The central performance, from Ellen Page, is beautifully judged."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is Page's triumph, spitting out smart-ass lines like she thought MEAN GIRLS was soft and GHOST WORLD held too optimistic a worldview....It's whip-smart, cool, and very, very funny."-- Chris Roberts, Uncut 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] perfectly judged three-act structure that follows the emotional highs and lows of Juno's winter-to-summer pregnancy, the film saves its aces for last."-- Empire Staff, Empire Juno | List Price | $39.99 (You save $7.90) | | Studio | 20th Century Fox | | Orig Year | 2007 | | All Time Sales Rank | 51051 | | CD Universe Part number | 7632468 | | Catalog number | 2251980 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | Apr 15, 2008 | | Rating | PG-13 (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | for mature thematic material, sexual content and language | | Running Time | 96 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Special Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Special Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound |
Juno Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great Movie A very touching and sweet movie. Reitman at his best. Submitted by livengood.greg.av (Chapel Hill, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Go To A High School, It's Cheaper! I love Diablo Cody...I think she is a talented writer, however, this movie, we see everyday by going by a high school. This is the main reason why most teens are still beliving it's cool to be pregnant. Giving them a false sense that a quick antidote & an hour & a half later, all will right itself. This movie is ok at best, and the best part of the movie still to me is Jason Bateman. Submitted by Courtnye (Chicago,IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
the best film of 2007 Juno is my favorite film of 2007. It is about a whip smart 16 year old girl named Juno (Ellen Page) who gets knocked up by her nerdy boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). Not being able to go through with an abortion,Juno decides to give the baby up for adoption. She and her best friend Leah ( Olivia Thirbly) find just the right couple (Jason Batmen and Jennifer Gardener) in an ad in the penny saver and Juno immediately sets up an appointment. The film goes on from there and you are completely absorbed in it. Diablo Cody's oscar winning script is brilliant, filled with quotable dialogue and sharp characters. Ellen Page gives the best performance of the year and should have won the oscar for her authentic performance. Page has terrific comic timing, but she brings depth and vulnerability to the character which is quite an achievement. Michael Cera,Jennifer Gardener,Jason Batmen,Olivia Thirbly, J.k Simmons, and Allison janey are excellent in supporting roles and Jason reitman directs skillfully. This movie is one of my favorite movies and a must see. Submitted by joe (manhattan,ny,usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Missed the hype on this one. totally missed the hype this movie got & I had how it leaves viewers believing that after you give birth you can just walk away & act like it never happened. I don't think that is exactly what we are supposed to be teaching the youth of America?
I really did love Page as the main role. She reminds me a lot of myself, with the sarcastic smart-ass outlook on everything. Some of the things that came out of her mouth would def. be something I would say. I also thought Cera played the perfect geek role. Good combination & did have a few laughs, just wasn't worth all hype made over it. Submitted by lw (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A lighter side of teenage pregnancy? It's hard to look on the lighter side of teenage prenancy, there really isn't one, but this film manages to find one; with Juno's quick wit, Bleeker the geeky boyfriend, and her families blunt honesty, it just makes you laugh. Beautifully acted by Ellen Page the film would not have been the same without her. Submitted by de6grace (NEV Dunedin, NZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$29.79 Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 takes over the screen like an invading horde. With all the gushing blood of a horror movie and the scope of a classic epic, the second film from Zack Snyder (who helmed the 2004 remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD) is an impressive visual spectacle. Gerard Butler (THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) plays Leonidas, the king of ancient Sparta. The city is famous for its warrior philosophy, and Leonidas won't kneel to the demands of Persia's King Xerxes (LOST's Rodrigo Santoro). Instead, Leonidas leads his 300-strong army against Xerxes's army of millions. Meanwhile, his wife (Lena Headley, THE BROTHERS GRIMM) campaigns in Sparta for the city to send reinforcements as she butts heads with the treacherous Theron (Dominic West, THE WIRE).
With its gore and scale, 300 marks director Snyder as a possible successor to Peter Jackson's throne. Jackson also got his start in horror with BAD TASTE and DEAD ALIVE, and the two men share a penchant for ambitious battle scenes. The huge fights in 300 rival Jackson's efforts in the LORD OF THE RINGS films. David Wenham, who starred in two of the Tolkien-based films, plays Dilios, one of the Spartan soldiers. Though the cast doesn't boast ...
| | No Country For Old Men Blu-ray (2007) Widescreen
Juno review
$30.49 With NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the Coen Brothers have found a perfect match in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. Their adaptation of McCarthy's praised novel is a staggering masterpiece. In this almost impossibly faithful adaptation, the film takes place in a small Texas border town in 1980. Sheriff Bell (a never-been-better Tommy Lee Jones) has ruled the land for years without the use of a gun, but a new brand of reckless lawlessness has taken over his town. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an innocent Everyman with a devoted wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), but when he stumbles across a drug deal gone deadly and finds two million dollars, he's determined to keep it for himself. There's only one problem. He's being pursued by one of the most amoral, evil psychopaths that the big screen has ever seen. Wearing an absurd haircut and brandishing a pressurized weapon that's used to murder cattle, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) creeps forward on his mission to track Moss down and return the money to its rightful owners to save his own skin. As the tension mounts, the body count begins to rise, confirming Sheriff Bell's inability to battle this new wave of modern brutality.
The most striking thing about the Coen Brothers' thriller is their masterly use of silence to create an almost unbearable level of tension. Cinematographer ...
| | Duchess Blu-ray (2008) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Juno DVD
$23.45 After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. The corset-clad actress stars as Georgiana Spenser, the Duchess of Devonshire. With her marriage to the duke (Ralph Fiennes), Georgiana achieves an impressive level of fame as Britons follow both her clothing style and her political advice. But even celebrity and wealth can't act as a salve in her marriage to the boring, boorish duke. When he begins to flaunt his affairs, Georgiana is tempted to return to a teenage crush, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper of THE HISTORY BOYS), to the anger of her husband and her mother (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL).
Fiennes's portrayal of the duke ranks roughly with his Lord Voldemort on a scale of beastly behavior, but the acclaimed actor manages to give him a level of humanity that far surpasses what he deserves. THE DUCHESS focuses on the lack of power possessed by Georgiana and, in fact, all women of her time, and the duke is the primary agent of her suppression. As she has done with other period films from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series to ...

$27.99 From the unexpectedly graphic opening shot, director Sidney Lumet proves he hasn't lost any of his bite with age. BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD is a riveting suspense thriller that retains the director's classic approach to storytelling while updating it at the same time. Working from an intense, expertly woven script by playwright-turned-screenwriter Kelly Masterson, Lumet establishes his tragic tone immediately. The story concerns a New York family with a roiling undercurrent of dysfunction. The eldest son, Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman), is a frustrated, drug-abusing stockbroker who is unable to satisfy his gorgeous wife (Marisa Tomei). The youngest son, Hank (Ethan Hawke), is passive and struggles to make alimony payments. Their parents (Albert Finney and Rosemary Harris) live in Westchester and operate a small jewelry store. Their lives begin to unravel when Andy approaches Hank about pulling off a heist that will seemingly solve all of their monetary problems. Everything about this idea is risky, yet Andy convinces his timid younger brother that this is his only way out of his current situation. Naturally, their plan falls apart, resulting in a series of tragedies that they never could have predicted.

Juno review
$18.59 This Disc features material from the two hour concert shot at The Point in Dublin, Ireland from November of 2006. "glorious jingle-jangle cacophony of washboards, tubas, accordions and guitars in a well-choreographed show that mixed temperance hall gospel and New orleans jelly roll."..Evening Herald (UK).
Bruce Springsteen is certainly no stranger to acoustic-based, folk-inspired music. So it's not a shock that he would release a tribute album to folk icon Pete Seeger with 2006's WE SHALL OVERCOME: THE SEEGER SESSIONS. The album celebrates not just Seeger's musical influence, but also the political stands the singer took, ...

Juno review
$25.09 This amusing sex farce updates age-old concepts about love, sex, and hot lesbians. A new supercomputer (with vague ties to the afterlife) spits out random e-mails that tell when people will die, or in the case of suave, affluent groom-to-be Roderick Blank (Simon Baker), a list of all the girls he ever slept with and ever will sleep with. There's 70 he's never even met, and he's due to be married in 11 days! Naturally his wedding is off and Roderick goes gallivanting around the city, crossing off names and gradually realizing the pitfalls of empty one-nighters. Meanwhile the mysterious "Death Nell" (Winona Ryder) is seducing and destroying a stream of deserving louts, spray painting anguished poetry on their walls and creating a media sensation. These two are bound to cross paths, and when they finally do, comeuppance is in the cards, with a bloody vengeance. Director-screenwriter Daniel Waters (HEATHERS) delivers laughs from brows both low and high, with Baker revealing a flair for sophisticated comedy beneath his mellow scruff. The slew of actresses comprising "the list" turn in uniformly fine work, with Julie Bowen a standout as the hot but "just friends" gal pal. Still, it's all stolen in the ninth inning by the radiantly ...
