Director Matt Reeves (THE PALLBEARER) and producer J. J. Abrams (LOST, ALIAS) turn a mysterious monster loose in Manhattan in the disaster flick CLOVERFIELD. The movie begins at a party for Rob (Michael Stahl-David), who has accepted a promotion that will send him to Japan. Hud (T. J. Miller) is entrusted with the responsibility of videotaping the party--and as the trouble grows, he holds on to the camera, recording everything that happens. In fact, the entire movie is seen through the lens of his camera, reminiscent of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. As terrified people in a post-9/11 New York City take to the streets, Rob decides to head uptown to try to save Beth (Odette Yustman), the woman he loves, though he's afraid to tell her so. Rob is joined by his brother Jason (Mike Vogel), Jason's girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas), Lily's friend Marlena (Lizzy Caplan), and Hud, who has a thing for Marlena. Rob is determined not to give up, even after almost being crushed by the Statue of Liberty's head and as the military shows up to force evacuation of the city. Reeves and first-time screenwriter Drew Goddard, who previously has written television episodes of such series as BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, ALIAS, and LOST, focus in on the central aspect of the story: people trying to survive the monster attack. Very little else is explained, since the story is told completely through the video camera. And there is no additional score to heighten the drama; the only music is that which is picked up by Hud and the camera's microphone, including snippets of songs by Kings of Leon, Parliament Funkadelic, Of Montreal, and others. The anticipation of CLOVERFIELD's release was enhanced by a viral marketing campaign that included Web sites built around the main characters and even the fictional drink Slusho.

Cloverfield Reviews:

"[A] surreptitiously subversive, stylistically clever little gem of an entertainment..." -- Grade: B+-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

5 stars out of 5 -- "CLOVERFIELD brings a new, more primal fear to the monster movie....[Made with] whip-smart invention and brilliant simplicity."-- Olly Richards, Empire

4 stars out of 5 -- "Breathless blockbuster entertainment with a bracing political payload and satire to spare."-- Andy Lowe, Total Film

"[T]he production team's integration of handheld low-light long-take camerawork and effects is a peculiarly austere marvel....CLOVERFIELD's uncomprehending vision can be chilling..."-- Henry K. Miller, Sight and Sound

3 stars out of 4 -- "[A] film that delivers a clever twist on perhaps the oldest sci-fi/horror staple of all: The Giant Monster Movie."-- Eric Alt, Premiere

"CLOVERFIELD is a surprisingly gripping thriller. Employing a pseudo-documentary handheld camera style, it offers a fresh spin on the monster movie genre."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today

"There is a visceral, pit-of-the-stomach dread to the scenes of urban destruction that rise above mere genre."-- Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times

1 star stupid camera work
The idiotic camera work totally destroyed this movie.I know the idea was that it was filmed on a camcorder by regular folks, but this movie could have been a great one if filmed normally.Too bad ,they did not see the potential in the story.Could have been the best monster film of all time. This way,no .

4 stars NOT BAD
YOU KNOW? A LOT OF MOVIES GET A LOT OF HYPE AND I USUALY DON'T WATCH OR JUMP RIGHT IN LINE TO SEE SUCH A MOVIE BUT I AM A MONSTER MOVIE HORROR FAN SO I HAD TO CHECK IT OUT. I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY MOVIES TO COUNT....THEY "BROKE BARRIERS"HERE....NO WAY, HOWEVERTHEY WERE CLEVER IN THE WAY THEY DELIVERED THE STORY OF THE TWO COLLEGE LOVERS AND HAD YOU FOCUSED ON THE PARTY AND WHAT CLIMAX WOULD TAKE PLACE THERE BEFORE ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. THE EFFECTS WERE GOOD I THOUGHT AND I ALSO THOUGHT THE MOVIE WAS WELL DONE AS TO LEAVE YOU THINKING AND WANDERING IF THE TWO SURVIVED AT THE END. STILL THOUGH I HAVE TO ACKNOWLEGE THAT "THE MIST" WAS THE MONSTER/HORROR MOVIE/DVD'S OF THE YEAR WITH ONE OF THE BEST ENDINGS EVER. GRANTED THEY STILL SHOULD HAVE MADE AN ALTERNATIVE ENDING FOR DVD. THAT SAID ....CLOVERFIELD IS A MUST WATCH FOR MONSTER MOVIE FANS. CHECK IT OUT.

5 stars Beasts each an apocalypse!!!!
My spiritual take on it: It was FOUR BEAST MONSTERS ACTUALLY. Symbolizing the first beast (ripped the statue head off), another beast (which those lil ones fell down off of in the city), the beast (in the bridge scene part), and a beast (in the appear silent out of thin air scene). Noteable in Revelation 13 (which even equal 4) right by simple words a, first, another, & the; concerning even the four beasts in Daniel. A beast which took out the cam guy symbolizes a dynamical beast which be a EVEN HIDDEN PORTAL which very well can DO ANY THING AND MAKE ANY ENTRANCE to spoil the devil which is not Satan nor Jesus nor Mabus, but a coward. The cowardly devil is symbolized by those people running. Plus, check Rev 12 to match. Actually noteable be us which be each a four-set beast with main heads the firstfruits. Any which know, knows what befalls even so obvious how IT prefers. Buy the DVD of this movie since it is much more than any not us can say!!!!

5 stars New Line Sci Fi
It's been a while since a Sci Fi movie left me thinking "wow that was a new way of looking at a Genre". The last few times were, Alien, Predator, Fifth Element. Technically, this movie isn't on that same level of course, but it's style and unique method of telling the story sets it apart from the norm. I thought the building block approach to introducing the audience to what was actually happening in New York, without explaining anything, was very good. Don't let the detractors stop you watching this movie..ps you need to see this on a surround sound system because the sound effects coming from the outside (the city)to the indoors, and then from the events taking place around the characters is an important element in the enjoyment of this film. If you watch it via a TV set it will not have the impact that it was designed to have.

The early 2000s have seen a string of big-budget remakes of classic horror films. In addition to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, John Carpenter's benchmark slasher flick HALLOWEEN has been given a new-millennial overhaul. At the helm of the project sits rocker Rob Zombie, whose previous films, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, brought a fan's touch and an auteur's vision to the director's chair. While Zombie's HALLOWEEN is faithful to Carpenter's vision, there are some obvious changes, the most pronounced of these ...

Based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT works overtime to pump fresh life into the vampire genre. Director David Slade (HARD CANDY) has created a series of pulse-pounding sequences, ripe with carnage, employing few tricks to keep his vision from getting lost in the seemingly tireless undertow of "undead" films. Located in the northernmost part of Alaska, the town of Barrow experiences a complete lack of sunshine for an entire month once a year. The town is populated with tough, hardworking, and generally law-abiding citizens, so there hasn't been much for Sheriff Eben Olesen (Josh Hartnett) to do except brood over his separation from his fire marshall wife, Stella (Melissa George). As darkness descends for its annual 30-day day, though, a series of bizarre discoveries rocks the town--and very soon vampiric Marlow (Danny Huston) and his minions arrive, slaughtering and sucking on everyone they ...

Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE) serves as director, writer, and producer of THE MIST, an adaptation of Stephen King's classic novella. After a vicious storm wreaks havoc in their small town in Maine, artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) heads out to the town supermarket for some much-needed supplies with his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), and his neighbor, Norton (Andre Braugher), in tow. Their trip soon turns to terror when a menacing white mist settles in, leaving this group of locals and out-of-towners fighting for survival against an unknown, bloodthirsty enemy. When the local religious zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to convince the group that the mist is punishment from God, Drayton and his cohorts realize that they may be trapped inside with an enemy just as dangerous as whatever is lurking outside. Tension runs high in this tale as the trapped group faces difficult moral decisions. Should they stay and wait out ...

With NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the Coen Brothers have found a perfect match in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. Their adaptation of McCarthy's praised novel is a staggering masterpiece. In this almost impossibly faithful adaptation, the film takes place in a small Texas border town in 1980. Sheriff Bell (a never-been-better Tommy Lee Jones) has ruled the land for years without the use of a gun, but a new brand of reckless lawlessness has taken over his town. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an innocent Everyman with a devoted wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), but when he stumbles across a drug deal gone deadly and finds two million dollars, he's determined to keep it for himself. There's only one problem. He's being ...

Hailing more from the pulp-melancholic spirit of CBS's 1978-1982 Hulk television series than its 2003 predecessor did, THE INCREDIBLE HULK wordlessly tells the entire gamma ray-afflicted origin story of scientist Bruce Banner's alter-ego within its first three minutes. This credit sequence in particular evokes (albeit with some cinematic weight) the lo-fi, premise-informing quality that one would find at the onset every episode of a cultish TV show, thus making two things quite clear. First, the Edward Norton-starring INCREDIBLE HULK is not a sequel to or a remake of Ang Lee's HULK, but a reboot equipped with an alternate plot, a new dynamic, and a different set of rules. Second, it is director Louis Leterrier's (UNLEASHED, THE TRANSPORTER) express intention to deliver a tightly wound, economically paced thriller in which scenes of drama and action are not mutually exclusive. THE INCREDIBLE HULK replaces cerebral family drama with the story of a lonely, afflicted ...
