In the 2008 computer-animated comedy IGOR, John Cusack provides the voice for the title character, one of many "Igors," whose sole purpose in life is to assist mad scientists in their diabolical experiments with a dutiful and mindless "Yes, master." When Cusack's bright, determined Igor strikes out on his own and creates the Frankenstein's-monster-like Eva (Molly Shannon), aided by a resurrected rabbit named Scamper (Steve Buscemi) and a mislabeled talking brain named Brian (Sean Hayes), his efforts incur the wrath of the winkingly monikered Dr. Schadenfreude (Eddie Izzard), who is set on putting Igor back in his henchman slot of the horror hierarchy. Directed by Tony Leonidas (LILO & STITCH 2: STITCH HAS A GLITCH), IGOR takes many of its macabre cues from horror-comedy classics THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, mixing monster-movie elements with moments of clever humor and generous amounts of slapstick. Although there are dark undercurrents in IGOR (see Buscemi's sarcastic, suicidal hare), the film generally sticks to a family-friendly misfit-makes-good theme, keeping it in the quirky vein of fellow CG-animation movies such as THE CORPSE BRIDE and MONSTERS, INC. While the cast is impressive (particularly the gloriously hammy Izzard), the surprisingly lively gothic-laboratory aesthetic of IGOR is its true star, with the playful visuals leaving plenty for both adults and children to marvel at.

Igor Reviews:

3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a compellingly oddball tale that should eventually find its niche as a minor late-night cult classic for NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS fans."-- Ken McIntyre, Total Film

"Clearly inspired by the dark-hearted stop-motion fables of Tim Burton...[a] fever-pitched computer-generated whizbang....The film's design is suitably cartoon Gothic..."-- Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times

"If Mel Brooks were to team up with Tim Burton, the result might be something like the loony and colorfully tantalizing animated film IGOR."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today

Igor DVD Features

This hilarious animated twist on the classic monster movie is must-see family fun! Determined to prove he can create his own diabolical invention, a mad scientist's (John Cleese) nice-guy assistant Igor (John Cusack) creates a female Franken-monster. But his creation, Eva (Molly Shannon), is sweet and sings show tunes! That is, until she falls into the clutches of Dr. Schadenfreude (Eddie Izzard) and his shape-shifting girlfriend (Jennifer Coolidge). Now it's up to Igor and his sidekicks (Steve Buscemi and Sean Hayes) to save Eva - and their country - from real evildoers, including sneaky Prince Malpert (Jay Leno)!

Begun in 2002 as a Los Angeles stage production by writers Darren Smith and Terrence Zdunich, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA was designed as a gory, comedic Grand Guignol to appeal more to club goers than fans of musical theater. One fan, aspiring director Darren Lynn Bousman, who has since worked on the SAW franchise, vowed to one day direct a film version of the show. Six years (and five SAW films) later, he has made good on his promise with a bizarre, gory, and unique piece of work that is as sure to entertain as it is to polarize its audience. In the year 2056, following an epidemic of human organ failure, the GeneCo Corporation--owned by the mafia-like Largo family--grows and installs new organs on a massive scale. The business, though, necessitates the employment of repo men to reclaim the organs from clients who miss their payments. Repo man and single father Nathan Wallace (Anthony Head, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) keeps his job a secret from his terminally ill daughter, Shilo (Alexa Vega), doing it only to pay for her costly medication. Nathan also has a secret history with GeneCo patriarch Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino)---and their connection is about to become public knowledge on the night of a concert from popular singer--and GeneCo client--Blind Mag (Sarah Brightman). Compellingly strange, REPO! resembles a comic book-influenced goth dinner theater production set within a dystopian video game. Musically, ...

DVD $14.59  3 stars Top 100
Continuing on with its story despite the death of namesake killer Jigsaw in the third installment, SAW V concerns itself with detailing who will carry on with his bloody work. Director David Hackl, the production designer on the previous three films, retains their familiar charnel house look. Though there are fewer grisly death sequences, faithful viewers will enjoy the creative plot twists. The film opens with a man strapped to a table above a pendulum. As the sharp blade begins swinging over his stomach, he has only a minute to stop it by inserting his hands into a device that will crush them. When the machine malfunctions, it's clear that it wasn't the work of the meticulous Jigsaw. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) continues the investigation he began in the previous film, only to wake up to find himself wearing a glass helmet filled with water. With a minimum of self-mutilation, he escapes and continues his investigation with the hunch that Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is somehow involved in the new rash of killings. Before long, a new group of strangers wakes up in Jigsaw's lair to face a series of brutal tests, and Jigsaw's ex-wife, Jill, is given a mysterious box at the execution of his will. An enormously popular and critic-proof series, SAW gives its fans what they want--creatively executed blood and guts. The fifth installment in as many years, ...

Based on the video game from Rockstar, MAX PAYNE stars Mark Wahlberg as a New York City cop out to avenge his slain wife and child, and heaven help anyone who gets in his blood-strewn way. The trail leads him into a network of shady characters mixed up with an experimental drug that causes super strength and fearlessness, as well as wild hallucinations of winged angels and demons. As Max gets closer and closer to the truth, he finds himself the target of a massive police manhunt, and in the crosshairs of the powerful kingpin behind the racket; soon enough, the angels and demons become downright deadly. Olga Kurylenko (QUANTUM OF SOLACE) is a beautiful Russian party girl who winds up dead after a late-night visit to Max's pad; her assassin sister (Mila Kunis) first goes after Max, then tries to help him get some answers. Rap star Ludacris (here credited as Chris Bridges) is a tough internal affairs cop investigating Payne's behavior. Shot in an impressively grungy palette of high-contrast grays and blacks, with snow and sheets of rain soaking the grim atmosphere, New York City is brilliantly morphed into something like Gotham City by way of Detroit, with a touch of X-FILES-style supernatural dread looming over everything. Director John Moore knows how to stage his action scenes: offices blow up, big chunks of rubble crush police cars, ...

When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new singer William DuVall was not an exact Staley soundalike, he managed to evoke both the unique timbre and sense of deep angst that were the late vocalist's trademarks. Throughout, the sound is heavier and sturdier than ever before, with songs like the first single "A Looking In View" and "Check My Brain" borrowing a bit from the nu-metal ...

Thor Freudenthal makes his feature-film directorial debut with this adaptation of Lois Duncan’s children’s book HOTEL FOR DOGS. Sixteen-year old Andi (Emma Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Jake T. Austin), are orphans living with their foster parents (Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon), two washed-up musicians. Desperate to keep what’s left of their family together, Andi and Bruce have secretly been caring for their family dog, Friday, on the sly for the last few years. When they follow their beloved pet into an abandoned hotel and find stray dogs living there, Andi and Bruce decide to round up all the strays in the city and expand their family. With the help of Dave (Johnny Simmons) and Heather (Kyla Pratt), two teens who work at the local pet store, they transform the abandoned hotel into a canine wonderland, using young Bruce’s skills as an inventor to make an automated feeding system, doggie restrooms, and some fun amusements, such as a car-ride simulation and a fetching machine. But if Animal Control has their way, all the residents of the hotel will be taken to the pound, and it’s up to Andi and Bruce to save their new family. This heartwarming tale reinforces the importance of family and the idea that families can come in many shapes and sizes. Although the idea itself is pretty improbable, it’s still loads of fun to see the gadgets and gizmos that Bruce creates to keep the dogs fed, in shape, and content. Roberts and Austin are believable as brother and sister, and Kudrow and Dillon are amusing as washed-up '80s rockers. Don Cheadle also appears as the compassionate social worker assigned to Andi and Bruce’s case. Hotel for Dogs, stars Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Don Cheadle in a smart, funny comedy adventure that shows how far love and imagination can take you. When their new guardians forbid ...

Christmas On Mars
Christmas On Mars DVDs  (2008)

Igor DVD
DVD $15.15
In 2001 Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne conceived CHRISTMAS ON MARS, a disorienting sci-fi feature that follows a small band of colonists who have settled on the red planet. Bouts of touring and recording led to a fractured production history for Coyne's film, but together with co-directors Bradley Beesley and George Salisbury, he finally released the movie some seven years after its inception. Flaming Lips member Steven Drozd plays Major Syrtis, a man who tries to lift spirits in the colony by arranging a Christmas pageant to celebrate the impending birth of the first baby on the planet. Unfortunately the man Syrtis chooses to portray Santa commits suicide and a vital part of the space station has malfunctioned, and its inhabitants fear that their days are numbered. Syrtis also suffers from a series of hallucinations, mostly involving oversized vaginas. But the sudden appearance of a green-skinned alien, played by Coyne, changes everything. Coyne and his gallant cast and crew produced CHRISTMAS ON MARS on a minuscule budget. The creaking sets, most of which were constructed in the director's backyard, only add an endearing, and frequently amusing, air to the proceedings. Fans of John Carpenter's trippy sci-fi satire, DARK STAR, will find much ...

In the early evening, Hector figures he deserves a little break from moving into his new house and retires to his lawn chair in the backyard. He won't have traveled more than a mile from this spot before he falls into a spinning wheel of existentialist dread--a stunning nightmare that pushes RASHOMON-style multiple-perspective storytelling so far past its outer limits that it flips into its very inverse. Through his binoculars, Hector spies something in the nearby trees--it appears to be a woman undressing. Hector's inevitable investigation results in a bizarre but fleeting encounter with a terrifying figure wrapped in pink head bandages, followed by an intense escape that takes him to a strange silo which houses a mysterious machine. The events that "follow," to use a term loosely, make for what might be the most flawless time-travel story in the history of movies. Where BACK TO THE FUTURE, TERMINATOR, and most other beloved time-tampering films are accepted only because they fudge the implications of causality in an entertainingly forgivable way, the Spanish-language TIMECRIMES does no fudging; it simply hurtles its audience into an unnerving thought experiment and, from there, never submits to a significant break in logic. Propelled by mesmerizing déjà vu, twisted yet camouflaged tragicomedy, and a low-key sense of queasy dread, this TWILIGHT ZONE-ready tale effortlessly transforms its rather mundane setting into a disturbingly surreal landscape. There is nothing out-of-the-ordinary about the grassy yards in which the movie takes place; it's just that they're lit by the kind of natural twilight ...
