| | Bynum Double Trio CD (2008)
Mi Flow "This Is It"
$11.39 The Double Trio by Stephen Haynes and Taylor Ho Bynum is a live recording at the Jazz Standard from the Festival of New Trumpet Music in September 2006. Dave Douglas, founder of the Festival for New Trumpet Music said on his blog:Taylor Ho Bynum and Stephen Haynes gave us a unique take on the double trio format at the Standard last night. On one side Taylor with Mary Halvorson on guitar and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. Stephen on the other with Allan Jaffe on guitar and Warren Smith on drums. The sound and compositions were rich and filled the space. It was refreshing to see something so different at a club in New York, and during the particularly abstract moments I found myself beaming at the big sign over the bandstand that says JAZZ STANDARD. Yes, finally! Both brass players have full sounds, Stephen ranging from airy and transparent to cutting and brassy, Taylor delving often into half-valved burry tones and squiggly lines. The construction of the pieces was ingenious, constantly shifting the relationship of trio to trio, instrument to instrument, melody to melody. Lots of memorable exchanges between Mary and Allan, Tomas and Warren. When I walked in and saw the stage it seemed there was something wrong with the set-up: Warren Smith had a large kit with a wall of gongs and an orchestral bass drum behind it. Tomas played a small kit arrayed on the opposite side of the stage, almost hiding behind the piano. Once the music started it was clear there was no disparity at all, just two very creative percussionists with two very different sets of instruments. It made for a great evening with a wide variety of sound. Stephen Haynes is an improvising composer, arts advocate and educator; a product of the historic and fertile Black Music Division at Bennington College, directed by Bill Dixon. Mr. Haynes’ early foundational studies were with Frank Baird, who chaired ...

| | Geraldine Houghton Lovely Musical Melodies By Geraldine CD (2008)
Mi Flow "This Is It"
$12.65 GERALDINE HOUGHTONGeraldine calls herself a \"by gosh and by golly\" musician. She has always loved music and started piano lessons when she was 7 years old. As an only child her parents doted on her and thought she was a genius when she picked out tunes by ear on the piano. At the same time she was struggling with reading in school. Her mother wondered why she could read music but not words. In the early fifties no one had heard of dyslexia. But it was through the study of music that her reading improved. It was not until Geraldine was an adult that she finally found out why she had such difficulty with reading.Geraldine often grew bored with practicing the piano for an hour a day as her mother insisted. In her boredom of going over the same song she often heard other music and different sequences of chord progressions. This improvising got her in trouble for \"goofing around\". She even tried to be a one man band by securing bells to her arms or feet, hanging her saxophone around her neck and a drum at her feet, while still playiing the piano. But it was this sense of creativity that helped her create her unique music. In junior high school she walked into marching band and said she wanted to join. The band teacher asked, \"What instrument do you play?\" Gerri answered \"The piano\". Her teacher laughed and stuck a alto sax in her hands. All through junior high and high school Gerri pursued the arts. For large musicals she often played in the orchestra for one song and then ran back stage to perform a dance or a theatrical number. She thought it was great fun!Geraldine creates fun wherever she goes. Whether it is traveling the world with her husband of 48 years, laughing with her three daughters or enjoying her 7 grandchildren (soon to be eight) her laughter fills the room. Much of her music was inspired by her family and their many adventures. On her CD the song \"Angel ...
