Disney Animation Collection Vol. 6: The Reluctant Dragon DVD This lighthearted story follows the adventures of a brave young boy who, emboldened by tales of brave knights, decides to pursue the horrible dragon that is terrifying the villagers. But what he discovers is a surprisingly friendly dragon that is more interested in reciting poetry and making music than devouring fair damsels. Will the boy be able to stop the local hero before he challenges the dragon to a fiery battle?

The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

After ten years in Hollywood, where he made the acclaimed LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN, Max Ophüls returned to France. His first film, LA RONDE, is taken from Arthur Schnitzler's play REIGEN, which features a series of interlocking love stories set in Vienna at the turn of the 19th Century. Ophüls added the visual metaphor of the merry-go-round and a raconteur (Anton Walbrook), who comments on love as the characters move from one partner to another. A student seduces a chambermaid, then, filled with confidence, has an affair with a married woman who goes home to her husband, who then goes off to his mistress--and so on until the circle comes back to the beginning. The situations and dialogue were considered quite risqué at the time and the film was actually banned in America. Recorded in the late-1950s, the John Coltrane of BLACK PEARLS is not the shining, legendary beacon of free jazz he eventually became by the mid-'60s. At the time of PEARLS, Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and this was one of his solo ventures. Like many Prestige discs of this period, it's a straight-ahead hard-bop jam session. Featuring sterling accompaniment by Red Garland (also then with Davis) on piano and Donald Byrd's crackling trumpet, PEARLS displays Coltrane's surging sheets-of-sound approach in full flower.
