Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Jaden Smith stars in this remake. This 3 disc set includes a digital copy and other special features. Also included is the original 1951 classic film. A remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL follows astrobiologist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) as she is unceremoniously plucked from her everyday life with her stepson (Jaden Smith), and whisked away to consult the government on a top-secret matter. That matter happens to be the arrival of a massive glowing sphere in Central Park, accompanied by a towering robot-like protector dubbed Gort and an alien ambassador named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who takes up human form to communicate with the people of Earth. When Klaatu finds himself faced with hawkish, uncompromising officials, he goes on the run with Benson and her son as the fate of the world gradually becomes clear.
Directed by Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE), this reimagining of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is fairly reverent to the original film, while adding a number of 21st-century elements, most notably a darker tone embodied by a more threatening Gort and the chilly, contemplative Klaatu, who is portrayed with pitch-perfect remove by Reeves. While the film--and the fate of humanity--rests on Reeves's shoulders, the cast is impressively filled out by Connelly and Smith, along with Kathy Bates, John Cleese, and familiar TV actors Jon Hamm (MAD MEN) and Kyle Chandler (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS). Derrickson also tempers excellent special effects with a bleak color palette and plenty of existential turmoil, making this EARTH a thoughtful and fascinatingly moody blockbuster. 3 STARS ONLY.... FIRST OFF LET ME SAY THIS REMAKE IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL. SECOND I HAVE TO SAY I DON'T THINK THIS MOVIE WAS THAT BAD OR AS BAD AS THE REVIEWS I SEE HERE AND HAVE READ ELSWHERE. THE GUYS WHO DO THESE REMAKES HAVE TO TWEEK AND DO LITTLE CHANGES TO MAKE STORIES BETTER OR EXPAND ON THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS ACTIONS FROM THE OLD MOVIE. REEVES WAS OKAY AS THE LEAD I THOUGHT BUT HEY, HE CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH WITH THE SCRIPT GIVEN TO HIM SO I COMMEND HIM FOR DOING A PRETTY FAIR JOB AT BEING AN UP TO DATE KLATTUE. CGI WAS PRETTY GOOD BUT NOT AS GREAT AS I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED FOR A MOVIE LIKE THIS THAT WAS HYPED TO THE IONASPHERE LIKE IT WAS LAST YEAR. JENNIFER CONNELY GETS A NOD FOR HER GOOD SUPPORTING ROLE THOUGH ADDING THE FACT THAT SHE WAS WIDOWED AND THE KID WAS NOT REALLY SOMETHING THEY NEEDED TO THROW IN. OVER ALL THOUGH I THINK IT WAS FAIRLY WELL DONE CONSIDERING. NEEDED SOME CHARACTER BACKGROUND REARRANGING BUT OVER ALL A FAIRLY GOOD MOVIE AND WORTH AT LEAST 1 OR 2 VIEWINGS. In Case of Fire; THROW IT IN! This has to be the most lame re-make movie on the planet. Place this one in the "Hall of Shame". It does not hold a candle to the classic 1951 classic. Steven Spielberg should of done this re-make as I am sure Spielberg would of stayed true to the original story line of the '51 Classic. This was not even worth the plastic it was made on. I cannot believe I wasted over an hour and a half watching this pathetic movie. What a stink bomb!! I rest my case. Submitted by Johnny (I live in a van down by the river) Was This Review Helpful? What are they thinking? A HUGE Hollywood blunder and failed remake of the great 50's classic that doesn't even deserve the one star minimum rating, but I doubt that anyone who saw it in hopes of seeing a fresh look at a great movie is surprized by the disappointment. Must Hollywood make everything bleak and dark in its Sci-fi remakes? How could you watch the original and even remotely think that this remake was a good idea? Granted, if you know nothing of the original, this movie might actually be fairly rated with one star, just like those who never saw "The Omega Man" might actually have thought that "I am Legend" was a well concieved movie. The real damage of this remake is felt more by those who hold the original in the rightly category of one of Sci-Fi's best ever. There is some value for the movie however. If I was teaching a class in film making to the next generation of movie makers, this film would make a great example of how not to remake a classic. Save your money and just wait to catch this one when it runs late night on cable and helps you get to sleep. If you want to buy something worthwhile, get the original. It may be over 50 years old, but even the most ignorant of the MTV generation would have to admit that it wins hands down. Submitted by David (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) Was This Review Helpful? Not worth the plastic it's made on Some movies are so much better left alone and this is one that should of never been re-made. I first seen the original(1951)in 1959 on NBC's "Saturday Night At The Movies". I was barely 7 years old at the time. I was in awe of it at the time because the special effects were way ahead of their time. This movie left us very empty. Klaatu in the original played by the late Michael Rennie was passive and strived for non-violence where as Klaatu in this remake is hostile and violent. The filmakers are way off the storyline here. The feedback here in my hometown was very negative as well and they have already pulled it out of our area theatres because of such a bad turnout of viewers. It didn't even play a full month here. Don't that tell you something already? As far as Keauna Reeves is concerned I think he was very mis-casted for this role. Michael Rennie was so much better and producers at that time made such a wise decision to have him play that part. Rennie at the time was an unknown actor in the states as he was from the U.K. and producers wanted a face that no one had seen before. Rennie died I believe back in the early to mid 60's from lung cancer. R.I.P. Michael. You were far better for the part of Klaatu. I rest my case.
