Widescreen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles; Spanish Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Sensormatic At first glance, Darren Aronofsky's THE WRESTLER may seem like a departure for the oftentimes frenetic filmmaker, and in some ways it is. When this story of a past-his-prime performer is compared to PI, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and THE FOUNTAIN, there is relatively little trace of psychoscientific addiction imagery, hip-hop editing, or grimly elegant peeks into dreams, nightmares, and otherworlds. Comic moments are plentiful. Aronofsky's signature close-ups of faces have been replaced with ones that force themselves into wounds inflicted for visceral spectacle. Much of the time the camera floats and bobs with an observant, almost documentary-like quietness, ethereally following the wrestler as if it were his past, and the viewer may perceive vague connections to a later, lonelier, less legitimate Rocky Balboa.
But Mickey Rourke isn't the Italian Stallion--he's Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a man who has spent decades slicing himself open in choreographed fights while adoring crowds roar. Pro wrestling isn't as lucrative as it was for Randy in the 1980s, but he stays at it while working menial jobs because performing isn't just the only thing he craves--it's the only thing that, at 50, he knows how to crave. While courting his one true friend, a stripper named Cassidy (Marisa Tomei), Randy does his best to restart a relationship with the angry daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) he abandoned. But Rourke imbues the image of Randy, ready to pounce from the ropes, looking almost as unreal as the box art on action figure packaging, with an expression of pain, desperation, and joy. It's a close-up that makes two things clear. For one, Randy's charisma is inseparable from the crippling fixation that's kept him alive. For another, THE WRESTLER might be at once a simpler and more complex meditation on addiction and eternal struggle than any of Aronofsky's earlier work. Wrestler Reviews: 5 stars out of 5 -- "Emotionally raw and with a climax that should draw tears, Mickey Rourke gives the performance of his career."-- Dan Jolin, Empire "THE WRESTLER is like ROCKY made by the Scorsese of MEAN STREETS. It's the rare movie fairy tale that's also a bravura work of art." -- Grade: A-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly 3 stars out of 4 -- "In THE WRESTLER, Mickey Rourke wallops us with a damaged hero who is full of pathos and poignant contradictions....Rourke gives the performance of his life."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today "Rourke brings just the right amount of faded charisma to Robinson....The actor is not playing himself but rather a part powerfully informed by his past life."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "[Mr. Aronofsky] makes a convincing show of brute realism. The supermarkets, trailer parks, V.F.W. halls and run-down amphitheaters of New Jersey are convincingly drab, and the grain of the celluloid carries a sour and salty aura of weariness and defeat."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times 4 stars out of 4 -- "Mickey Rourke plays the battered, broke, lonely hero, Randy ('The Ram') Robinson. This is the performance of his lifetime....This is Rourke doing astonishing physical acting."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Included in Entertainment Weekly's 2008 Films Of The Year -- "In this great, tender, brutal, lyrical, and haunting tale of a washed-up professional wrestler still living off the fumes of his '80s glory days, Darren Aronofsky shows you Randy 'The Ram' Robinson from the inside out..."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly 5 stars out of 5 -- "[B]eautiful, bittersweet and, at times, surprisingly funny....For Rourke, at least, the wrestler is the role of a lifetime, and he's better than he's ever been."-- Tom Charity, Total Film "Imagining someone other than the beatifically battered Mickey Rourke in the role of THE WRESTLER would be like picturing someone other than John Malkovich in BEING JOHN MALKOVICH."-- John Anderson, Washington Post "Elements that might have otherwise seemed cliché...are poignantly authentic in the hands of Rourke and director Darren Aronofsky..."-- A.V. Club, A.V. Club 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Director Darren Aronofsky's new film THE WRESTLER is a quiet, intimate portrait of a troubled soul -- someone at odds with himself and with life in general whose every ounce of pain and virtue is measured onscreen."-- Marco Cerritos, Box Office 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Rourke doesn't make a false move in this movie....You watch THE WRESTLER in a state of pure exhilaration. Wrestler Movie Review A classic It's only been out since December of last year and I can already tell you this. Mickey Rourke gives one of the best acting performances I've seen in a long time. Darren Aronofsky is going to be huge one day. Submitted by frankcastle09 (Winder, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A downer, but original and extremely well acted The wrestler is a film about a has been wrestler (Mickey Rourke) who has a failed relationship with his daughter and is dying of heart problems. When he is told he can"t wrestle anymore,he tries to reconnect with his daughter and tries to improve his life. Rourke delivers a stunning, film anchoring performance that would have cinched the best actor oscar any other year if it had not been for sean penn, who won his second oscar for his fearless work in Milk. Marisa Tomei is superb as Cassidy,a stripper who befriends Rourke and understands him in a way the rest of the world can't. However, the ending is incredibly downbeat and it made me feel awful about people who make too many mistakes in they're lives. But I reccomend this movie if you want to see amazing acting and don't mind really brutal wrestling scenes! Submitted by joe (manhattan,ny,usa) Was This Review Helpful? The Greatest film of the year The Wrestler is without a doubt the film of 2008. It is an amazing piece of cinema and it carries great significance and importance. Mickey Rouke delivers one of the greatest performances of his carrier with his unbelievable portrayal of a retired wrestler trying to make it back into the business while juggling his own troubled and confusing life. He also tries to gain his daughters love again but ultimately fails. The Wrestler combines gritty and realistic fight scenes and performances with sharp and surprisingly humorous dialogue. It is also a very emotional film and encounters a broken down man on the verge of a heart attack who believes he has one more wrestling match left in him. Overall The Wrestler is a sublime film with magnificent camerawork and range. I highly advice this film for anybody who appreciates the sheer art of cinema and film-making. Ignore the Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire. This is the FILM OF 2008. Submitted by Joey 34 (L.A Callifornia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Rourke-A-Mania Runs Wild Here.. The role of Randy "The Ram" was custom made for Mickey Rourke. I'm glad Nic Cage backed down because there's no way he could've pulled it off like Mickey Rourke did. One of my personal favorite movies. And if you ask me, Rourke got robbed of the Oscar. Do yourself a favor and check out this movie. You will thank me later. Rourke mirroring Hogan, and Tomei with pierced nipples... This was a well acted movie, especially by Rourke. The wrestling scenes did not overshadow the underlying stories. Some wrestling greats made cameos, and the grocery store scenes were ultra-realistic. This deserved to be more widely recognized by Hollywood, but instead, politically motivated movies like Milk and Slumdog get the push because wrestling is portrayed as racist and redneck. (Even though the owner of the largest wrestling company is from Greenwich, CT) This movie didn't deserve to get shi* on as much as it has. By the way, not that I mind it, but why is Marisa Tomei suddenly doing nude scenes like this after almost 25 years of acting? Is this the Meg Ryan "In The Cut" syndrome? Wrestler DVD Mickey Rourke gives the performance of a lifetime as pro wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a former superstar now paying the price for twenty years of grueling punishment in and out of the ring. But he's about to risk everything to prove he has one more match left in him: a re-staging of his famous Madison Square Garden bout against "The Ayatollah." Darren Aronofsky directs a powerful cast in this action-packed saga of guts, glory and gritty determination that is "as irresistible as a headlock" (New York Post ).

Wrestler film
$19.79 A well-crafted horror film in the tradition of Guillermo del Toro's THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, Swedish import LET THE RIGHT ONE IN ably blends genre chills with genuine feeling. Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) is a 12-year-old outcast who is frequently picked on by his classmates. He dreams of getting his revenge, but he never stands up to the boys. With the arrival of his new next-door neighbor, 12-year-old Eli (Lina Leandersson), Oskar may finally have found a friend, ally, and first love. But Eli is no ordinary girl: she must keep her pale skin out of the sunlight, she can perform inhuman physical feats, and she has thirst for blood. The bodies begin to pile up, but Oskar can't stay away from the girl who has finally given him courage.
Based on the novel by John Ajvide Linqvist (who also wrote the script), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the best kind of horror film: one that transcends the tropes of the genre to become something new. This is director Tomas Alfredson's first foray into horror, and he doesn't hesitate to include bits of vampire mythology. But his background making comedies and dramas gives the film a surprising depth; the relationship between Oskar and Eli is tentative and sweet, even though their interactions may be surrounded by blood and violence. Composer Johan Soderqvist and the sound department create a fascinating palette of music and sounds that add to the film's perfectly chilly mood, and setting the film in a snowy Swedish suburb gives director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema a starkly beautiful environment for shooting. Though LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is ostensibly about a pair of children, this is a horror film for adults. There are plenty of scares, but it remains moving and intelligent, ...

$82.79 High school romance is difficult enough to navigate when both people are human. But for 17-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart, INTO THE WILD) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE), Edward's life as a vampire complicates things even more. At first, when Bella moves from sunny Phoenix to the rainiest corner of Washington State, she isn't sure where she fits in at her new high school. Then she meets Edward, an ethereal beauty of a boy whose unnatural speed and strength lead Bella to the conclusion that her new crush is one of the undead. Suddenly, Bella's boring life is transformed; she's surrounded by love and danger in equal parts, thanks to the hunger of Edward and others of his kind.
TWILIGHT is based on the first book in the addictive series by author Stephenie Meyer. Director Catherine Hardwicke (THIRTEEN) certainly knows her audience, which is primarily the teenage girls who worship the book and its characters. There are plenty of swoonworthy shots of Pattinson's perfectly pale Edward, and his romance with Stewart's nicely acted Bella will cause many a sigh among the devoted fans. While TWILIGHT is primarily a love story in the ROMEO AND JULIET mold, there's also plenty of action and horror to be found. Blood flows (this is a vampire movie, after all), but the small amount of gore shouldn't ...

$22.19 After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. The corset-clad actress stars as Georgiana Spenser, the Duchess of Devonshire. With her marriage to the duke (Ralph Fiennes), Georgiana achieves an impressive level of fame as Britons follow both her clothing style and her political advice. But even celebrity and wealth can't act as a salve in her marriage to the boring, boorish duke. When he begins to flaunt his affairs, Georgiana is tempted to return to a teenage crush, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper of THE HISTORY BOYS), to the anger of her husband and her mother (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL).
Fiennes's portrayal of the duke ranks roughly with his Lord Voldemort on a scale of beastly behavior, but the acclaimed actor manages to give him a level of humanity that far surpasses what he deserves. THE DUCHESS focuses on the lack of power possessed by Georgiana and, in fact, all women of her time, and the duke is the primary agent of her suppression. As she has done with other period films from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series to KING ARTHUR, Knightley brings spirit to the role, as well as a regal ...
