The most prolific and revered era of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was ushered in with the recording of AFRICAINE. Remarkably, this stellar session, which saw the introduction of tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter into the lineup, was not issued until 1979, a full 20 years after its recording. Better late than never, though, as this marks the first in string of now-essential Jazz Messenger titles for Blue Note that teamed the master bandleader Blakey with the gifted youngsters Shorter and trumpeter Lee Morgan in the front line. This period would prove to be the launching pad for both of these legendary performers' inspirational careers. Shorter, who would come to hold the musical director's chair throughout his tenure with the Messengers, contributes two timeless compositions: the rhythmically enticing title track and his now-classic "Lester Left Town." Throughout the session, Shorter and Morgan work in perfect tandem with a magical sense of togetherness that would become the signature of their partnership in the band. Morgan's compositions include the percussion powerhouse "Haina," featuring a forceful percussion intro led by Blakey and conga man Dizzy Reece, and the fidgety swinger "The Midget."
