"The Canyon Records Masters". Classic early 70s West Coast Soul Jazz. Rare tracks from the legendary Canyon label,. Features West Coast studio legends Wilton Felder (of The Crusaders), Paul Humphrey and Stax recording artist Freddy Robinson (who went on to work with John Mayall). Arranged & produced by legendary Chicago producer Monk Higgins. Stanley's entire "Flipped Out" LP, plus Gloria Lynne's 45's for Canyon.
Personnel: Stanley Turrentine (saxophone); Gloria Lynne (vocals). The tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine is heard here on a straight-ahead set of funky soul jazz, performing a collection of originals and pop standards, including Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour," Laura Nyro's Wedding Bell Blues," and the Beatles' "Let It Be." Accompanied by a guitar, keyboards, and drums combo, Turrentine shows the assured skill of a master instrumentalist. The 14 cuts that make up Flipped Out on Love contain Stanley Turrentine's Flipped Out album, recorded for Los Angeles label Canyon Records between his CTI and Fantasy periods with producer Monk Higgins, Wilton Felder, Freddy Robinson (yep, the Stax session man), and Paul Humphrey. This is nonessential Turrentine, but it is some sweet soul-jazz with the man playing the hits of the day with verve and some real fire. The remainder of the disc is filled out with singer Gloria Lynne's 45s for the Canyon label. And while the pairing may seem odd, it works better than one might suspect. ~ Thom Jurek

| | David "Fathead" Newman I Remember Brother Ray CD (2005)
Flipped Out On Love
$13.85 Personnel: David "Fathead" Newman (tenor saxophone); David "Fathead" Newman ; Steve Nelson Quartet, Steve Nelson (vibraphone); John Menegon (bass instrument); John Hicks (piano); Winard Harper (drums). Audio Mixer: Rudy Van Gelder. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (08/14/2004). If ever a musician had a pedigree for simultaneously lamenting and celebrating the late Ray Charles, David "Fathead" Newman does. Newman met Charles in 1952 and was a working member of his band from 1954-1964. This program of tunes so closely associated with Charles features the tenor saxophonist in the company of vibist Steve Nelson, John Hicks in the piano chair, Winard Harper on drums, and bassist John Menegon. Newman's signature Southern soul tone, saturated in warmth and emotion, is by turns buttery, fat, and back-porch tender. From the opening chorus of "Hit the Road, Jack," one can feel the great control Newman has over the dynamic quality of these tunes. He treats them as ...
