Personnel: Don Byron (clarinet). Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY. Arrangers: Michael Carr; Eric Maschwitz. The Bang on a Can All-Stars is a sextet of musicians drawn from a larger orchestra that specializes in debuting new music, much of which would be considered modern classical music. On A Ballad for Many, the group performs some of the works of jazz clarinetist Don Byron. Their set consists of six sketches from "Eugene" (a live accompaniment to a silent episode of Ernie Kovacs' Show), nine brief selections from his soundtrack to a documentary on the Tuskegee Airmen, and five other pieces. Byron makes appearances on three of the numbers, but otherwise the focus is on Bang on a Can's interpretations of his originals. The music is episodic, a bit incomplete without the picture (since most of the music is actually soundtracks) and colorful if not quite essential. ~ Scott Yanow Ballad For Many / Don Byron, Bang On A Can Music Ballad For Many / Don Byron, Bang On A Can Review

$18.05 Personnel: Omar Sosa (vocals, piano, electronics); Childo Tomas (vocals, electric bass, mbira); Luis Depestre (saxophone, percussion); Steve Arguelles (drums, electronics); Miguel "Angá" Diaz (percussion). Multi-directional pianist Omar Sosa has been offering solo and small ensemble efforts in generous quantity, which makes a larger group effort a welcome commodity. That this one recorded in-concert from Radio France in Paris is all the more inviting, as Sosa's quintet is en fuego for most of this enlivening date. What Sosa offers is a mix of modern jazz, world music, a large dosage of his Cuban heritage, ritual music, subtle techno inferences, and fierce high level musicianship. This CD marked one final effort for Latin percussionist ...
