Where Angels Tread music CDs
$14.49 With the exception of the opening number (which is from 1935) and one song apiece from 1940 (the two-sided hit "No Name Jive") and 1941, the music on this collection dates from 1937-1939. A dozen of the selections are Hoagy Carmichael compositions and two apiece feature Louis Armstrong (who interacts vocally with Pee Wee Hunt on "Rockin' Chair" and "Lazybones"), the Merry Macs, and Carmichael himself ("Washboard Blues" and "Little Old Lady"). While none of those renditions are definitive, they are enjoyable to hear. In addition, there are some swinging obscurities along with hit versions of "Smoke Rings" and "Casa Loma Stomp," both of which are remakes. The Casa Loma Orchestra lost some of its musical personality by 1937 but was still a very popular swing band. This Hep CD, along with the label's three other Casa Loma releases, does a fine job of summing up the legacy of this underrated but pioneering swing orchestra. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Astrud Gilberto Girl From Ipanema CD (2004)
Where Angels Tread songs
$7.89 What's an Astrud Gilberto compilation without "The Girl from Ipanema"? And what's a chancy budget-line collection without an embarrassing re-recording of the only hit in attendance? Brilliant's ten-track Gilberto collection includes a batch of '70s tracks from the Brazilian chanteuse, leading off with Vince Montana, Jr.'s recasting of the title track. Also included are a bare few interesting tracks, including "Far Away" with a vocal and trumpet solo by Chet Baker. The same material was previously repeated on identically titled collections from Prime Cuts, Bellaphon, and Dressed to Kill. ~ John Bush
This Synergy compilation of Astrud Gilberto's 1970s work for Creed Taylor's CTI label is identical to many others on various labels like Dressed To Kill, Brilliant and Hallmark -- whose cover is even duplicated here. And don't be fooled by the inclusion of the title track, it is a '70s funk-jazz remake of the bossa nova classic. No matter the price and the great sound quality, musically this is one to avoid. ~ Thom Jurek

$17.95 | | Grant Green Iron City CD (1967)
Where Angels Tread album
$13.89 Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Although his most famous records were made on Blue Note, Grant Green's IRON CITY, which was originally released on Cobblestone and later Muse Records, is arguably the best of his mid-period output. Recorded in 1967, this is a trio session with Big John Patton showing some amazing skills on Hammond organ and Ben Dixon on drums. Together they form the consummate organ trio that was the basis of the soul-jazz movement.
Green is masterful throughout, showing tremendous dexterity, expression, and fire. His dancing lines on exciting cuts like the nimble "Samba De Orpheus" and the ultra-funky "High Heeled Sneakers" are excellent examples of his influential single-line soling technique. Patton is exceptional as well; his powerful work on these and Nat Adderley's "Work Song" are prime examples of his own mastery of the organ. Of special note is the trio's moving rendition of the traditional "Motherless Child." In all, this is classic Grant Green, classic soul, and classic fun.
Grant Green is the great unsung hero of jazz guitar. In 1967 Green recorded this fine album Iron City which seemed to suggest that the guitarist was set to rise to the top but his career was derailed by drug addiction and such players as Wes Montgomery and George Benson ...
