DVD. Film written/produced by Bob Rafaelson & Jack Nichols on. Stars Victor Mature, Annette Funicello, Carol Doda, Fra nk Zappa, Teri Garr, & Sonny Liston. 8 trks: Porpoise Song , Ditty Diego - War Chant, Circle Sky, more. 87 min . Hi-fi. Rated G. HEAD is a mind-blowing Monkee-filled pop culture excursion, courtesy of writer Jack Nicholson (yes, that Jack Nicholson) and writer-director Bob Rafelson. It's a head trip, man! Director Bob Rafelson's feature film debut is based on the hit television show THE MONKEES, which Rafelson created and produced (along with Bert Schneider). Like the TV show, HEAD follows the adventures of the fictitious pop band the Monkees--four goofy, mop-topped young rockers who look suspiciously like the Beatles. Written by Rafelson and actor Jack Nicholson, the film rejects plot in favor of a psychedelic trip through a series of parodies of every major film genre, including the Western, the musical, and the war film. These stylized romps are intercut with various surreal scenes, such as the classic sequence where the Monkees are sucked up through a giant vacuum cleaner and then spewed out as bits of dandruff in Victor Mature's hair. Also thrown into the bizarre mix are clips of television commercials, classic movies, and documentary footage from Vietnam. The result is an avant-garde, kaleidoscopic collage, peppered with Monkees songs such as "Circle Sky," "Porpoise Song," and "Daddy's Song." Theatrical release: November 6, 1968.
During the war-movie parody, Micky Dolenz sports a gold football helmet. It is rumored that this is the same helmet Jack Nicholson wore in EASY RIDER.
Co-screenwriters Rafelson and Jack Nicholson based HEAD on conversations they had with the Monkees while on a vacation.
Nicholson and Rafelson can both be spotted briefly on the commissary set.
"Suck it before the venom reaches my heart" is Teri Garr's first line in a motion picture. Head Reviews: "Funny, absurd, and, in retrospect, insightful."

way out-and on target Before Mtv, before The Ben Stiller Show, there was head. Head is a time capsule of 1960s music, fun and colors. A witty and joyous romp through a time that seems innocent by contemporary standards. this is a film that will please nostalgia buffs and those seeing it all for the first time. Well worth watching and fine for all ages. Submitted by james (Buffalo New York- usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hey hey we are the monkees you know we love to please The First time i saw the movie head was well over 15 years ago. I was and am still an avid monkees fan, and to see head on dvd is Great. Everyone always critizes the Monkees because they were hired to be a group/tv show, but without going on too much about this, look at all the entertainment and fun they brought....and head is one shinning example, while it is nothing like the tv show, it stands alone as a really fab romp....with tons of special guests and some really great songs, anyone who has heard porpoise song, has to know how great it is.....it's really a dark and sometimes political comedy. with lots of drug and sexual references....like the scene where this girl is kissing all the monkees and says "they are even"(kissing wise) and then mike whispers something in her ear and she says "are you kidding" and laughs....now you know what he was asking;-)
The music is superb, even if you are not a monkees fan, if no one told you who was singing it, you would never know it was the monkees..the only thing i would have liked to sceen on this dvd would have been if they could have had a wide screen version and maybe some audio commentary by all four monkees, and also just play all the music scenes and maybe have some sing along lyrics....but this was released before rhino got really good at doing that stuff....maybe next time, a rerelease:-) Submitted by nebulapig (Sarasota, Florida, USA (although i am typing this ) Was This Review Helpful? | | Billy Joe Shaver Everybody's Brother CD (2007)
Head video
$13.95 Personnel: Jamie Hartford, Pat McLaughlin, Randy Scruggs (acoustic guitar); Eddy Shaver (electric guitar); Laura Cash (fiddle); Paco Shipp (harmonica); Tony Harrell (accordion); Dave Roe (electric bass); Dave Pomeroy (bass guitar); Freddy Joe Fletcher, Kenny Malone, Rick Lonow (drums); The Whole Gang (percussion); Etta Britt (background vocals). Additional personnel: John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Tanya Tucker, Bill Miller (vocals); Marty Stuart (electric guitar). A Billy Joe Shaver album is always cause for celebration, but on this 2007, Grammy-nominated release, the outlaw country troubadour shines in a whole new way. Produced by John Carter Cash, the album features all country-gospel originals, half of them sung in duet with a laundry list of country greats, including the late Johnny Cash, old partner in crime Kris Kristofferson, and Tanya Tucker. Although the Christian-themed lyrics are utterly sincere, fans needn't worry that Shaver has gone soft on them. The music crackles with country-rocking, honky-tonking fire. Billy Joe Shaver is one of the finest songwriters country music has produced in the past 50 years, a poet of the honky tonk who can write about wild nights and the troubled morning after with equal eloquence. Shaver is also a devout Christian whose faith has guided him through more than his share of hard times -- including the death of his wife, mother, and son within the space of 18 months -- and if you find that at all off-putting, you won't ...

| | Message To Love: The Isle Of Wight Festival - The Movie DVD (1970)
Head movie DVD
$7.89 MESSAGE TO LOVE: THE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL is a vital historical document that depicts a climate in which the boundless hippie optimism of the 1960s was about to be chewed up and spit out by the materialistic capitalism of the 1970s. Poorly organized by three upstart concert promoters, the festival brought together 600,000 music fans for a star-studded five-day event. Unfortunately, not many of the festival attendees bothered to purchase tickets, and the resulting dramas kept the concert from becoming the free-and-easy event that people dreamed it would be. While the lineup reads like a who's who of the era's greatest artists--The Who, Free, Taste, Tiny Tim, John Sebastian, Donovan, Ten Years After, The Moody Blues, Kris Kristofferson, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, ELP, Joan Baez, Jethro Tull, The Doors, and more--the overlying tensions threatened to drown out the music itself. That said, the show had its standout moments, including what would turn out to be the final stage performance of Jimi Hendrix. Ultimately, director Murray Lerner was aiming for something greater than mere musical reverie, and the finished product reflects that, ...
