| All You Need is......RUTLES!! Better on DVD than VHS (which I also have. Very clever and very, very funny. I laughed til I stopped! Plus the CD Universe service was great... had the product in 4 days! Not a whole big todo on the deleted scenes, and there is a 'written' background of how this movie came to be, which is a little hard to read, but all in all.... By Michael (Vancouver,WA) |
| THE best rock parody ever! The meticulous attention to detail in recreating many memorable Fab moments, is amazing. The songs are spot on and the humor ranges from over-the-top Python-esque hilarity, to sly little asides only knowable by the biggest Beatle fans. By a reviewer (san francisco, ca) |

Beatles Let It Be CDs (1970) Top Seller
Rutles, The: All You Need Is Cash DVD for sale LET IT BE...NAKED contains a FLY ON THE WALL bonus disc including song rehearsals and conversation snatches.
Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett and interview excerpts with The Beatles
In its original form, LET IT BE signaled the end of an era, closing the book on the Beatles, as well as literally and figuratively marking the end of the '60s. The 1970 release evolved from friction-filled sessions the Beatles intended to be an organic, bare-bones return to their roots. Instead, the endless hours of tapes were eventually handed over to Phil Spector, since neither the quickly splintering Beatles nor their longtime producer George Martin wanted to sift through the voluminous results.
LET IT BE... NAKED sets the record straight, revisiting the contentious sessions, stripping away the Spectorian orchestrations, reworking the running order, and losing all extemporaneous in-studio banter. On this version of the album, filler tracks ("Dig It," "Maggie Mae") are dropped, while juicy b-side "Don't Let Me Down" is added. The most obvious revamping is on the songs handled heavily by Spector. Removing the orchestrations from "The Long and Winding Road" and "Across the Universe" gives Paul McCartney's vocals considerably more resonance on the former, doing the same for John Lennon's voice and guitar on the latter. This alternate take on LET IT BE enhances the album's power, reclaiming the raw, unadorned quality that was meant to be its calling card from the beginning.

Rutles, The: All You Need Is Cash movie A brilliant and hilarious documentary-style satire of a has-been British heavy metal band who never really was on an absurd American comeback tour that never quite gets off the ground, THIS IS SPINAL TAP practically birthed the mockumentary style. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls, respectively--three clueless, self-absorbed men who form the nucleus of Spinal Tap, aging purveyors of overwrought songs with titles such as "Big Bottom," "Smell the Glove," and "Sex Farm." Shot in faux cinema verité-style with director Rob Reiner as fictional filmmaker Marty DiBergi, the film lampoons just about every rock & roll cliché (not to mention every rockumentary cliché) in the book as it follows these fallen rock idols from one disastrous gig to the next. Scenes of the tour's descent from desperation into total collapse are interspersed with interviews in which the band members delightfully prattle on inanely about the none-too-illustrious history and dubious vision of Spinal Tap. THIS IS SPINAL TAP is a striking and acutely hysterical directorial debut for Reiner and a deserved cult classic. Watch for an endless array of cameos by wonderful comic character actors along the way.

George Harrison / Billy Preston Concert for George DVDs (2003) Top Seller
Rutles, The: All You Need Is Cash film On the first anniversary of the death of George Harrison--November 29, 2002--a group of his friends paid tribute to the Quiet Beatle by staging an all-star concert featuring the songs of Harrison, from his days with the Fab Five as well as his long and underrated solo career and work with the Traveling Wilburys. Also included were songs written for and about Harrison, from Ringo Starr's evocative "Photograph" to Ravi and Anoushka Shankar's inspirational "Arpan." Among the outstanding performances, held in London's Royal Albert Hall, were Eric Clapton and Jeff Lynne playing "I Want to Tell You," Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers blasting out "Taxman" and "I Need You," Paul McCartney chiming in with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "For You Blue," and fifth Beatle Billy Preston taking on "My Sweet Lord." Clapton and McCartney's duet on "Something" is one of the many highlights. The elaborate concert, directed by David Leland and including backstage behind-the-scenes interviews with some of the participants, also featured appearances by the Boys and Girls Choir, the English Chamber Choir, the London Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Monty Python crew, just to change the mood. Harrison's musician son, Dhani, also shows up--his resemblance to his father is remarkable. Proceeds from the film and DVD release will benefit Harrison's Material World Charitable Foundation.

Beatles Beatles Anthology DVDs (1996)
Rutles, The: All You Need Is Cash review A deluxe, multi-volume chronicle of the complete history of the Beatles, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is the definitive documentary, featuring 10 hours of footage culled from interviews, live concerts, studio sessions, feature films, home movies and more. Twenty-five years after the Beatles' breakup, Paul, George, and Ringo reunited to offer new perspectives on their lives and their bitter 1970 separation. ANTHOLOGY traces the roots of the group with striking archival footage and photographs. The collection offers a wealth of unreleased early Beatles material, some of it long presumed lost and some previously available only on bootlegs--from pre-Ringo practice sessions to early-'60s tracks with fabbed-up versions of pop standards like "Ain't She Sweet" and "Besame Mucho." The live side of the band is well represented too, by such unforgettable items as Ringo tearing through "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Boys" at a 1964 TV taping, and John ripping into "Twist & Shout" at the band's 1963 Royal Command Performance.
The DVD release contains all 8 original video programs on 4 DVD's with enhanced video quality and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This package features a bonus disc of "Anthology", featuring 80 minutes of rare & never-before-seen footage.

Rutles Archaeology CD (1996)
Rutles, The: All You Need Is Cash DVD for sale It had to happen -- if the Beatles were going to finally mine their recorded legacy for the world to enjoy, could the Rutles be far behind? Ex-Bonzo Dog Band member Neil Innes, who was the musical genius behind the original Rutles' output, got back with ex-Beach Boy Ricky Fataar and drummer John Halsey, and they finished and released Archaeology in time to take advantage of the prospects for renewed Rutlemania. The results are better than anything that Paul or Ringo has come up with in decades, and also manage to parody the outtake structure of much of the Beatles' Anthology material, complete with flubbed notes and harmonies -- the Rutles' outtakes are as enjoyable and maybe more edifying about humor than some of the Beatles' outtakes are about music. What makes this work even better than the original Rutles album in some ways is that the Rutles don't have to even go through the motions of "finishing" these songs -- they can have fun at the expense of the Beatles' less-than-perfect songs, which are sometimes pretty funny themselves. So "Hey Mister" can ape "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Yer Blues" without shame, right down to the studio screaming at the end, and "Easy Listening" has merciless fun at the expense of Ringo's vocals and Paul's "Why Don't We Do It in the Road," as well as his solo-era pop successes. "Now She's Left You" is a vicious takeoff of "Yesterday" -- and, even better, of "Yesterday" as a concert number. Echoes of Sgt. Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, the White Album, and Rubber Soul resound throughout (listen for the repeated "number two, number two, number two" at the end of "We've Arrived"). "Unfinished Words" ("left is right, right is wrong") may be better than "Cheese and Onions" as a parody of John Lennon's writing style, and most of the rest is in that league. The production is excellent, and the sound, strangely enough, has held up better than that of the Beatles' vintage tapes. ~ Bruce Eder
