(1 Customer Review)
Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, Lara & Reyes -- all have their place in modern flamenco music. But something about these guys sets them apart. Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah are in top form, with their own label, Selva, and a disc that is an easygoing rival for their two Mesa classics and previous, pre-stardom releases. Ten seconds of the opening fireball, "Jardin," or the slow-building brushfire of "La Tinaja," and listeners are back in familiar territory, with the chemistry carrying complex improvisational refrains within a deceptively simple melodic structure. Then each will split off like a buzzing bumblebee eager to find its way back to the hive. Long John Oliva's percussion ensures that no toes will be still for long, but fortunately there are a few spots of slow-dance relief to avoid possible exotic heart attacks. The best of these is the brooding "Dark Fire," which features the violin wrappings of Charlie Bisharat (who should have been used more). This collection takes a few listens before each individual tune emerges from the plucky multiculturalism, but it's every bit as soul-piercing as their previous work. ~ Jonathan Widran

Heat Of The Sun music CDs
$12.65 Frontera is an intriguing effort by a duo whose music would unfortunately quickly turn into flaccid new age mush. Clearly influenced by the likes of Al DiMeola and the ECM stable, Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah start from the mellowest side of post-fusion '70s jazz, add world music forms suggested by their varied upbringings (Strunz was born in Costa Rica and raised around the world as the son of a diplomat; Farah was born in Iran and educated in England), and then incorporate a few hints of the sound that Windham Hill Records would soon turn into clichéd mush. Luckily, this time out those troubling hints of over-slickness are but a minor ...
| | Strunz & Farah Stringweave CD (2001)
Heat Of The Sun songs
$13.79 It's surprising that it's taken this dynamic gypsy guitar duo so many years to title a recording after exactly what it is they do with their intricate string tapestries. But better late than never, and Stringweave, like all their great works, is both technically sharp and musically whimsical. Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah named their buoyant opening track, "Las Verduras," after "our favorite guitar players who are named after vegetables," and the tongue-in-cheek whimsy is apparent on the track. Some sections of the piece feature a higher-toned string interacting with Alberto Salas' spicy piano, while others have a darker flavor in the lead as a higher tone takes the rhythm guitar harmony role. As always, the two break in the middle for some crazy improvisations, ...

The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots ...
