| | Strunz & Farah Live CD Strunz & Farah Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recorded live at Leeds, North Hollywood, California on August 15, 1996. Includes liner notes by Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah.
World music has never sounded as electrifying as it does in the quick-strumming hands of this dynamic duo and their chemistry, which has set the global charts on fire throughout the 1990s and is perfectly captured on this no-holds-barred live recording. A very clear, intimate sound and minimal distortion helps bring the cross-cultural acoustic alchemy of Strunz (from Costa Rica) and Farah (from Iran) to glorious life. They blend seamlessly and stir up a gypsy magic that's wild, crazy, and a helluva lot of fun. Key in on "Selva," "Bola," and "Heat of the Sun." ~ Jonathan Widran

Live album
$13.79 Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, Lara & Reyes -- all have their place in modern flamenco music. But something about these guys sets them apart. Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah are in top form, with their own label, Selva, and a disc that is an easygoing rival for their two Mesa classics and previous, pre-stardom releases. Ten seconds of the opening fireball, "Jardin," or the slow-building brushfire of "La Tinaja," and listeners are back in familiar territory, with the chemistry carrying complex improvisational refrains within a deceptively simple melodic structure. Then each will split off like a buzzing bumblebee eager to find its way back to the hive. Long John Oliva's percussion ensures that no toes will be still for long, but fortunately there are a few spots of slow-dance relief to avoid possible exotic heart attacks. The best of these is the brooding "Dark Fire," which features the violin wrappings of Charlie Bisharat (who should have been used more). This collection takes a few listens before each individual tune emerges from the plucky multiculturalism, but it's every bit as soul-piercing as their previous work. ~ Jonathan Widran
Spanish guitarists and Grammy nominees in the world music category, Jorge Strunz (Costa Rica) & Ardeshir Farah (Iran) perform 11 original compositions backed by a world class ensemble of musicians on bass, drums, congas, timbales, keyboards, violin & dum
Includes liner notes by Kathlyn Powell.

| | Strunz & Farah Stringweave CD (2001)
Live album
$13.79 It's surprising that it's taken this dynamic gypsy guitar duo so many years to title a recording after exactly what it is they do with their intricate string tapestries. But better late than never, and Stringweave, like all their great works, is both technically sharp and musically whimsical. Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah named their buoyant opening track, "Las Verduras," after "our favorite guitar players who are named after vegetables," and the tongue-in-cheek whimsy is apparent on the track. Some sections of the piece feature a higher-toned string interacting with Alberto Salas' spicy piano, while others have a darker flavor in the lead as a higher tone takes the rhythm guitar harmony role. As always, the two break in the middle for some crazy improvisations, texturing those with insistent strumming rhythms. "Rosa Blanca" lopes along with sparkling strings over a samba groove, enhanced by Charlie Bisharat's lush violin and the increasingly dense à gogo percussion pattern of Luis Conte; it's like the soundtrack to an adventurous scene in a movie about a gypsy who just can't settle. Bisharat adds a classical romance sensibility to the hot and percussive "Gypsy in the Wood." "Campera" is laid-back, cool strumming cantina music with bird calls and some Native American flavors. "Tierra Mojada" features the usual strumming/plucky improv mix with a gently croaking chorus of the "amphibian orchestra" in the background. Most of Strunz & Farah's tunes are manic with energy, but the cool "Rimas de Cuerdas" just sort of moseys along with an extra jazz guitar element provided by Liona Boyd. As always, a joyous dual affair ...
| | Zoot Sims Blues For Two CD (1983)
Live CD music
$9.59 Although guitarist Joe Pass recorded many unaccompanied solo albums, he made relatively few dates as part of a duo. This CD reissue of a session with tenor-saxophonist Joe Pass works quite well because Zoot Sims was a natural swinger who did not need a full rhythm section to push him. His playing on the selections (mainly standards including "Dindi," "Poor Butterfly," "Pennies From Heaven" and "I Hadn't Anyone Till You") is as heated and lyrical as usual. Pass also warms up quickly to the situation (Sims must have been easy to accompany) ...
| | Seeds Travel With Your Mind CD (1995)
Live music CDs
$12.39 In garage rock, a little often goes a long way, especially when it comes to the rehearsal tapes, demos, and alternate versions so beloved by trainspotting collectors. Those who memorize matrix numbers and session lists will absolutely adore this 1965-1967 collection of odds and sods by L.A.'s psychedelic-garage heroes the Seeds: 66 minutes' worth of ephemera, ready to be pored over. More casual listeners might find it rather slow going; despite the inclusion of several great songs, like the phenomenally powerful "Satisfy You" and a weirdly stripped-down alternate take of the trippy "March of the Flower Children," there's much here that's only of interest to die-hard fans, like the plodding ten-minute-plus jam "900 Million People Daily" and a chaotic rehearsal take of "Pushin' Too Hard." Complete novices ...

| | Charlie Rouse Epistrophy CD (1988)
Live album
$9.59 Although he had an extensive career, tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is best remembered for his decade (1960-1970) as a member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet. It is only right that the last time that he picked up his horn was for a Monk tribute concert. This historic event, originally released by Landmark and reissued with one extra selection on a 1997 32 Jazz CD, finds Rouse in prime form despite the fact that he had just seven weeks to live (before passing on from lung cancer). The date was special from the start, with producer Orrin Keepnews getting Rouse to say a few words to the audience about his time with Monk. There are renditions of "Nutty" and "Ruby, My Dear" that match Rouse with pianist George Cables, bassist Jeff Chambers and drummer Ralph Penland; "Blue Monk" has Jessica Williams sitting in quite effectively on piano; the "new" rendition of "In Walked Bud" showcases vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery in a quartet with Cables, Chambers, and Penland; and, for "'Round Midnight" and "Epistrophy" (Thelonious' closing theme, which also closed the career of Charlie Rouse), the tenorman and quartet are joined by trumpeter Don Cherry. A historic occasion that resulted ...

$18.99 \"How You Live\" is former Las Vegas Showgirl, Joni Tindall\'s second Gospel CD. This CD conveys a personal message from the artist of optimism and desire to live life to the fullest in Christ! This tone is set with the very first song, \'Anyway\' written by Martina McBride, and is carried throughout the CD with upbeat and familiar songs, and then sweetly conveyed in the closing title track, \'How You Live\' (Turn up the Music). There is a definite \'country\' feel to the compilation ...
