Powerfull Hammond, plus soaring vocals... I can compare this album with best Deep Purple and Atomic Rooster works...

||An Overlooked Masterpiece|
Quartermass delivered powerful, keyboard-driven progressive rock in their 1970 one-and-only self-titled album. However, in spite of awesome vocals, thought-provoking lyrics and driving percussion(not to mention the cool album artwork!), it was probably the lack of electric guitar which doomed this power trio to relative obscurity.

||An Overlooked Classic|
Peter Robinson's excellent Hammond B-3 organ and piano, coupled with Gustafson's strong vocals and songwriting skills, make this classic a must-have, especially for those who like "Power Trios" with keyboards instead of the usual guitar. This was some of the earliest synthesiser on record. It's worth noting that Paul Buckmaster was the leader of the cello section (there is some amazing sounding string orchestra stuff on "Laughin' Tackle" and "Good Lord Knows"). I speculate that Buckmaster (who did the strings on all the early Elton John albums) had more input on the string section than the liner notes reveal. Supposedly, Buckmaster would tune every string instrument himself, and then overdub small string quartets, using close-miking, several times to get a highly-controlled string sound. At any rate, this album is to be highly regarded for its overall excellent musicianship, as well as the amazing string orchestra work. Check out Buckmaster's other work on Elton John's "Friends" soundtrack, and the "12 Monkeys" soundtrack.
