Flaco Jimenez's storied career saw him straddling the line between traditionalist and pioneer in the musical stew that was the border region of Texas. While well-known for his forays into popular music with fellow San Antonians Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender--most notably on Sahm's 1973 release, SIR DOUG AND HIS BAND, and later in the San Antonio supergroup Texas Tornados--Jimenez is a purist at heart, and the 1999 release THE BEST OF FLACO JIMENEZ looks past his collaborations with rock-&-rollers to focus on his hardcore tejano roots and his feathery expertise with an accordion. The songs are almost exclusively traditional fare sung in Spanish, with the notable exception of Peter Rowan's "Free Mexican Airforce," the presence of which seems rather tongue-in-cheek considering its company on this collection. Regardless, the disc remains a great introduction for anyone with any interest in one of the most interesting figures in American music.

Best Of Flaco Jimenez Songs Best Of Flaco Jimenez Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Dynamic Duo It wasnt too long ago, when I finally found some old recordings tucked away in the back of my grandfathers record cabinet. As I wiped away some of the dust, the name that preceded my grandfathers came to a suprise. You see, my grandfather (Hugo Gonzales) and Flaco Jimenez recorded numerous songs together in the early years. I grew up with the conjunto music, and I have a deep love and respect for the this backbone to all the new tejano singers of today (Emilio, Ram, Mazz, ect.) Without the pioneers of the past, where would the younger guys be today?
This CD bring backs a lot memories of the good old days. They've put together songs that sound good now as they did even back then. I have this CD, but I think the one thing that I feel proud to call my own, is my grandfather, who still this day, and probably will continue till the day he dies, is playing his music for hundreds/thousands to enjoy. Good things never change, they only get better. Flaco Jimenez continues to knock em dead, any place he goes. The Dynamic Duo, Flaco Jimenez and Hugo Gonzales........what good music is made of.
