This CD features a logical combination: singer Diane Schuur with the Count Basie big band. In what would be longtime rhythm guitarist Freddie Green's final performance, Schuur and the Basie ghost band (under the direction of Frank Foster) perform material that includes her standards (such as "Deedles' Blues" and "Climbing Higher Mountains"), Dave Brubeck's "Travlin' Blues" and the Joe Williams-associated "Everyday I Have The Blues." Unfortunately, the Basie band is mostly used in accompaniment without any significant solos, but Schuur sounds quite comfortable in this format and her voice is in prime form. ~ Scott Yanow
Directed by Stanley Dorfman.
The Count Basie Orchestra: Frank Foster (leader, tenor saxophone); Danny House, Danny Turner (alto saxophone); Eric Dixon, Kenny Hing (tenor saxophone); John Williams (baritone saxophone), Sonny Cohn, Melton Mustafa, Bob Ojeda, Byron Stripling (trumpet); Clarence Banks, Bill Hughes, Melvin Wanzo, Dennis Wilson (trombone); Donald T. Carson (piano); Freddie Green (guitar); Lynn Seaton (bass); Dennis Mackrel (drums). Diane Schuur & Count Basie Orchestra
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and ...

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The Village Vanguard CDs (1999) Box Set
Diane Schuur & Count Basie Orchestra
$36.69 Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York. Band #1 recorded on March 9 & 10, 1990 and July 3 & 7, 1991. Band #2 recorded from December 3-5, 1993. Band #3 recorded from December 2-4, 1994. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
To truly capture the spirit of jazz, one must experience the music live as it happens. To this end, Wynton Marsalis has assembled a stunning collection of performances by three versions of his working septet at the famous Village Vanguard between 1991 and 1994. In this legendary underground temple of jazz, the music is free to become whatever it chooses. Under Marsalis's guidance his art comes alive in this setting, free from the constraints of more formal recording or performing restrictions. This is certainly the best forum for the music to communicate ...
| | Count Basie Atomic Swing CD (1999)
Diane Schuur & Count Basie Orchestra
$8.95 Released in 1999 to cash in on the resurgence of interest in swing music among post-baby boomers, Atomic Swing manages to transcend its immediate commercial purpose. It is the first 20-bit remastering of the Roulette library, and the sound quality alone makes it worth picking up. The 13 tracks present were cut by Basie over a six-year period with Morris Levy's Roulette Records, and they're a strong mix despite only three of the numbers coming off of the legendary Atomic Mr. Basie album. Most of the rest is from afterwards -- amazingly, only two of the numbers here -- "The Late, Late Show" and "Taps Miller" -- overlap with Capitol's existing Best of the Roulette Years, so duplication is a minimum, and the sound is amazingly good. The brass on "Moten Swing" and the broader numbers has equally impressive measures of richness and presence, while softer, moodier pieces like "The Midnight Sun Never Sets" display surprising warmth (but Eddie Jones' bass and Freddie Green's guitar also seem very close). There are no notes, but that's not ...
| | Peter Hammill Typical CDs (1999) Import
Diane Schuur & Count Basie Orchestra
$19.79 Peter Hamill (best known for his work with VAn Der Graaf Generator) released this live album in 1992. "My Room," "Vision," and "Ophelia" are among the tracks.
Drawn from a collection of 1992 solo recordings made in venues across northern Europe, this double-CD release is an intriguing mix of the spontaneous and the meticulous -- the one on the night, the other coming with the preparation of the release eight years down the line. Peter Hammill is known for being a quirky fellow; this is yet another of those quirks. As he points out in the liner notes (another surprise, as Hammill is not precisely known for carrying on at length in booklets), the title of the release is a misnomer -- there is no such thing as a typical show for Hammill, who likes to choose his weapons, so to speak, at the last minute. Even then, in the course of a concert, the songs will be twisted and turned, often approached in different ways, expanded, contracted, approached softly instead of full-tilt, or approached full-tilt where cautions and softness used to be the watchwords. The idea is to keep bringing something ...
