The ultimate contemporary jazz hyphenate Russ Freeman (guitarist/arranger/producer/keyboardist/composer) became one of smooth jazz's most influential artists through magnificent projects like this one, chosen by Jazziz as the best contemporary jazz album of all time. This third Ripps release is a masterpiece of mouthwatering pop-jazz tunes, featuring strong hooks, gorgeous texturing, and styles ranging from tropical (the sunny "Aruba" featuring Rob Mullins on keys and Carl Anderson scatting away) and Brazilian ("One Summer Night in Brazil," Freeman's lush centerpiece) to soulful (a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together") and rockin' (the locomotive "Earthbound," which shows Freeman's strings at their frenzied peak). But there's more to the tourist story -- there's also the bounce of bassist Steve Bailey, the boom of drummer Tony Morales, and the light exoticism of Steve Reid's soundscapes. The Rippingtons hit more peaks than valleys as the '90s unfolded, and Freeman expanded his scope beyond simple pop-jazz, but this one still sets the standard for smooth jazz. ~ Jonathan Widran

Any truehearted devotee of the Rippingtons Featuring Russ Freeman knows the two secrets of their unparalleled success in the contemporary jazz world over the course of numerous releases since 1986. First and foremost, it's those lush, ultra-melodic Freeman compositions, many of which have become genre classics. Beyond those, the band has attracted fans the world over with one of the most exciting and dynamic live shows in instrumental music. It seems wholly appropriate, then, to take stock of the wealth of Freeman's catalog not with a mere greatest-hits collection, but with the fun-filled CD and video package, Live in L.A. Recorded September 25 ...
| | Rippingtons Life In The Tropics CDs (2000)
Tourist In Paradise
$8.15 Life in the Tropics -- the first Peak Records release for the Rippingtons -- features guitarist Russ Freeman and is a great smooth jazz celebration of rhythmic delights that resemble the tropical splendor of an island oasis. The natural beauty of each composition is reflected by the great talents of the Rippingtons: Kim Stone on bass, Dave Kochanski on keyboards, Ramon Yslas on percussion, and Dave Hooper on drums, along with special guests the great saxophonists Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, and Paul Taylor, keyboardist Bob James, and guitarist Peter White. The centerpiece of this CD is "Love Child," a sensuous mid-tempo ballad that alternates the brilliant sax work ...

Tourist In Paradise
$11.49 Marlene VerPlanck is a veteran singer who still has plenty to offer jazz fans after nearly a half century as a professional. Her vocals are consistently clear, mellow, and swinging in this program dominated by show tunes. But her choices aren't ones that have exactly been done to death at the start of the 21st century. She soars in the bright bossa nova scoring of "I Got Lost in His Arms," while her warmth is obvious in "Be Careful, It's ...

$13.99 | | Best Of Milt Jackson CD (2004)
Tourist In Paradise
$8.19 Outside of the sophisticated, formal demeanor of the Modern Jazz Quartet, vibraphonist Milt "Bags" Jackson could be exuberant, funky, and fun-loving (which is not to say that his MJQ work doesn't display these qualities, only that they were usually sublimated within the group's ethos). THE BEST OF MILT JACKSON, which collects 14 cuts from Jackson's dates as a leader for Prestige and Riverside, demonstrates the lighter side of his sensibility, as well as his mastery of the blues idiom (see his self-penned tune "Stonewall") and command of the expressive capabilities of his instrument.
When not playing with the MJQ, Jackson enjoyed working in ensembles of various sizes. THE BEST OF represents Jackson's cool, cerebral--yet always swinging--vibes playing in contexts ranging from a quartet to a 14-piece big band. Moreover, the personnel--trumpeters ...
| | Jerome Sabbagh North CD (2004)
Tourist In Paradise
$16.45 Personnel:Jerome Sabbagh: saxophone Ben Monder: guitarJoe Martin: bassTed Poor: drumsAll compositions by Jerome Sabbagh"North" was elected CD of the year 2005 by the readers of French monthly Jazzman. It was also selected in the top 10 jazz albums of 2005 by the Ottawa Citizen (Canada).Reviews“The willfully lyrical tenor saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh is the rarest of rare birds: a young tenor saxophonist with a distinctive concept, dependent not so much on his elders for inspiration as his own imagination.” (Chris Kelsey, JazzTimes)"Mr. Sabbagh played with untroubled self-assurance, and his songs had a sleek and sturdy appeal. Just as crucially, his colleagues strove for the unexpected, individually and as an ensemble. [...] Mr. Sabbagh avoided direct allusions to the saxophone totems. What he is working toward, simply and effectively, is a sincerely personal vocabulary." (Nate Chinen, New York Times)"One of the most skilled young tenor saxophonists around, Sabbagh's got a tune called "Sick Leo" that breaks away from the Wayne Shorter archetype so many horn players fall into. A slow saunter of a tune, it not only turns your head, but gives guitarist Ben Monder a chance to get his freak on." (Jim Macnie, Village Voice)"A startlingly good young jazz musician [...] Sabbagh chooses notes ...
