Reference Point album
$10.15 ARCANUM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
Nick Webb and Greg Carmichael, the duo core of Acoustic Alchemy, forego the traditional greatest-hits route by taking an amazingly fresh approach to the concept on their ninth venture Arcanum, which presents the spruced-up live performance evolution of nine old favorites along with three solid new tracks. Yet the best-selling British melodizers even twist the conventions of a typical concert disc by opting to record those takes at England's legendary Pinewood Film Studios, away from the roaring crowds and in the presence of string members of the London Metropolitan Orchestra. The most striking new element is the explosive electric guitar approach of longtime cohort/former producer John Parsons, who adds some staggering zing to the kinetic "Reference Point" and "Casino," while shading in a slightly more subtle manner on the loping "Catalina Kiss" and "Mr. Chow." The strings don't receive a huge workout, but they add new ...
| | Acoustic Alchemy Positive Thinking... CD (1998)
Reference Point CD music
$10.95 Acoustic Alchemy's appealing mix of subtle world rhythms, improvisational steel and nylon string textures, and crisp pop and new agey melodies practically defined smooth jazz in the genre's early days. When co-founder Nick Webb -- who passed away in February 1998 from pancreatic cancer -- took his final turn for the worse just as recording was about to begin, longtime band accompanist John Parsons, a steel string master in his own right, stepped in. Fortunately, Parsons and Carmichael work up a striking chemistry of their own on Positive Thinking. Webb and Carmichael's final compositions feature recall some of their most beloved songs; the opener "Passionelle" begins with a sparse, gently percussive dual-strumming segment, building gradually in intensity before the rhythm section joins in for a soaring chorus, much like the title cut from 1990's Reference Point. Simple, caressing ballads like "Rainwatching W.I." and "Vapour Trails" recall ...
| | Walter Beasley Tonight We Love CD (1997)
Reference Point music CDs
$14.65 In a year when the late George Howard's only output was a few new tracks on a Best Of compilation, Walter Beasley's effortless takes on the same type of easy grooving soprano sax soul music make a solid substitute. Like Howard, Beasley is longer on passionate playing than innovation, big on mid tempo romance and pretty much content to fit right in the ...

Reference Point CD music
$19.19 The Hit Fctory Studios, New York, New York between September and November 2001. Includes liner notes by Tommy Krasker and Frank Rich.
This 20th anniversary performance of the 1981 musical was recorded less than two weeks after September 11, 2001, in N.Y.C., no less. So forgive the stars (Heather Headley, Audra McDonald, and Lillias White) if they're not quite as lively or as joyful as they should be. But in the telling of a Supremes-like girl group who has their ups and downs -- captured here for the first time in their complete form on disc -- the game one-time cast has a ball with the material. And the showstopper "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" still thrills after all these years. ~ Michael Gallucci

| | David Dahlstein Study Your Own Heart CD (2006)
Reference Point music CDs
$16.45 Accomplished trombonist/pianist David Dahlsten and the jazz troupe he calls Rainbow Dancing has released a thought-provoking and invigorating collection of eight original tunes on a CD entitled Study Your Own Heart that is by turns vibrant, breezy and ethereal. David Dahlsten has spent over 40 years studying Jazz, Salsa, R&B and Classical styles and playing Trombone as a sideman with some of the greats such as Bobby Womack, Buddy Miles, Asukita and Johnny Martinez. Dahlsten started writing poetry while traveling with the Buddy Miles band in the 70's as it made him feel good. He knew he also wanted to compose his own music so in 1996 he began studying piano with Lloyd Hebert, also a trombone player, and it opened the door for him to write not only musical lines but also chord signatures - now he had a home for his poetry. Study Your Own Heart, Dahlsten's second CD project, has a relaxed energy that serves to perfectly compliment its powerful musicianship. It's evident from the opening tune Damn If I Know, whose easy horns and tight harmonies set a tangible mood for all that follows. It melds into the insistent horns and catchy rhythms of Delirious Desire, the album's second tune and is followed by the vigorous intensity of Lofted Winged Essence. Study Your Own Heart, the title song, is permeated by an irresistible ...
