This disc offers a very fine, if brief (10 tracks) sampler of pianist Ahmad Jamal's work from the mid-1950s to the mid-'60s. On the most superficial listen, the music here seems to fall in line with the standard cool and post-bop modes of the era, but further attention reveals Jamal's exquisite sensibility as an architect of sound in the small-ensemble context. On "Concern" and the well-known "Poinciana," Jamal's penchant for a chamber-like conception of jazz is evident.
As a player and arranger, Jamal utilizes space and subtlety to create tension within his own spare melody lines and between the players in his trio. These techniques abound in his interpretations of tunes by Irving Berlin, Billy Strayhorn, McCoy Tyner, and Errol Garner, and on his own excellent compositions (note the carefully calibrated pizzicato guitar lines by Ray Crawford on "New Rhumba"). Through all of this delicacy and formal innovation, Jamal's group manages to swing like nobody's business, giving the listener a double dose of pleasure on this budget compilation.
This is part of GRP Records' Priceless Jazz series.

Priceless Jazz Collection album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive ...

This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first ...
