This split LP, recorded in three days in 1999, seems as miraculous as it is a godsend. Because they were one of those truly astonishing modern groups that spontaneously combusted in the midst of an attenuated creative peak, Leatherface's unexpected 1993 bust-up seemed particularly cruel. Thousands of scattered souls openly mourned when the news came down that the punk/post-punk powerhouse had vanished. Perhaps after listening to the sea of old live recordings and B-sides, Leatherface's members realized what they'd thrown away, buried what hatchets needed burying, and pulled a Lazarus. The sound of this new recording recalls the spark, the lift-off, and the balls-out clear smack of Mush and the Last. Though Frankie Norman Warsaw Stubbs' vocals are mixed just a little too low to totally match those older detonations -- you have to go down into the two guitars a little to find him, making the words harder to get -- it's still such a corker, it completely corrects the muddy mixes on Stubbs' Jesse and Pope albums. And though this record also finds the quartet retreating to a stylistic territory closer to Mush and Minx, backing away from the more adventurous turf of the Last, it's too intense and exciting to even remotely quibble with. That this unexpected recording is a reality is that rarest of things: a long-shot wish fulfilled. More recent American emo stars Hot Water Music surprisingly put up a good fight, trying to be in the same ballpark with Leatherface's ashen attack, but they lack a singer of Stubbs' caliber to be appearing on the same LP as him or a tightness in playing that takes one's breath away. Queen's 1973 debut is definitely their most underrated album of that decade. Although most tracks aren't as well known as the band's later material, QUEEN proves to be an impressively consistent listen from beginning to end. It's extraordinary how many of the group's future musical trademarks were already detectable in their debut--Brian May's orchestrated guitar harmonies, multi-tracked vocal "choirs," imaginative songwriting and dynamics that could switch from head-banging heavy metal to reflective balladry in the blink of an eye.
Although QUEEN was recorded off and on over a three-year period, the tracks still manage to be focused and unified. The rocker "Liar" contains a middle section that foreshadows Queen's future hits (1975's "Bohemian Rhapsody," 1976's "Somebody To Love," etc.) while "The Night Comes Down" and "Doing All Right" are two gorgeous ballads. But make no mistake: the majority of QUEEN is raucous hard rock--see "Great King Rat" and the grand Zeppelin groove of "Son & Daughter." Also included as a CD bonus track is the forgotten composition "Mad The Swine," and an instrumental version of their future hit "Seven Seas Of Rhye."

The big news is Drums & Tuba's return after their three-year break from the studio is filled with vocals, most from drummer Tony Nozero. This is still classic Drums & Tuba -- King Crimson meets beat-filled post-punk with jam band freedom -- with the band a little more focused on groove and angst. In other words, the post-punk aspect is working double time on Battles Olé, with Nozero's Howard Devoto-meets-Richard Butler vocals emphasizing everything '80s and underground about the record. Big difference is few punkers or punk-funkers let the songs stretch out like they do here, and nobody ran a band back then with just tuba, guitar, and drums. After an atmospheric intro, the opening "Two Dollars" thunders and throbs like Liquid Liquid-loving stoner rock while "Four Notes of April" combines funky pipes and pans percussion over a sinister song that's Love and Rockets at their most prog. The epic "Magnum Opie" features all the improvisation and time changes of the old days for a gripping ten minutes, but the crunchy and difficult "If I Die" that follows proves this band isn't one to live in the past or provide safe haven for anyone who comes with expectations. Nozero's vocals are just part of the sonic wash, with Brian Wolff's tuba acting as bass and Neil McKeely's drum still providing the hypnotic rhythms all the swirling notes cling on. As firm rhythms take hold and waves of sound envelope the listener, the quirkiness of the instrumentation disappears even faster than it does when listening to the similarly built Morphine. Hardly contrived and way past clever, with Battles Olé Drums & Tuba have moved well past breaking rules and focus on making hallucinatory music that was meant to be. ~ David Jeffries
