| | Greetings From The Welfare State CD
Greetings From the Welfare State is intended to show the American listening audience that U.K. punk didn't die out in the mid-'80s. It's always been there, it's just that many of the bands lacked the funding to export their releases to the States. But thanks to the support of BYO Records, a whole new audience is being introduced to the angst that was spawned by the likes of the Business, Crass, and the Exploited, among others.
The majority of this compilation consists of pop-punk acts who have already made a name for themselves across the Atlantic -- Snuff, Leatherface, Goober Patrol, and Consumed -- but it also includes the traditional '77 punk of the Stains, Road Rage, and Silencer 7, as well as the political ska-punk of Citizen Fish, the Tone, and the Newtown Grunts. Unfortunately, Greetings From the Welfare State excludes the genres of anarcho-punk and hardcore, resulting in an incomplete picture of what England has to offer in the way of punk. But at least this album will spread the word about a number of bands who have gone unheard by the American audience. ~ Mike DaRonco

Greetings From The Welfare State album
$14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares ...

Greetings From The Welfare State album
$12.24 On This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars shift their music with the shifting times, adopting a hybrid of the Killers' retro new wave and My Chemical Romance's gothic prog, winding up with a sound that suits their stance. Producers Steve Lillywhite and Flood, both veterans of U2, do give This Is War an appropriately epic scale, helping to bring into focus this mix of synth rock, metal, and prog flavors with Auto-Tuned vocals, gurgling synthesized loops, Kanye cameos, and a children's choir on almost every other song. This move toward goth-glam requires 30 Seconds to emphasize hooks and gives them aural variety, which makes this their most appealing album. ~ Stephen ...

$21.29 Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics. An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches. Tough and opinionated, Chrissie Hynde's first declaration of independence established the formula she proceeded ...
