Straight Ahead album
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's ...

Straight Ahead music CDs
$11.45 In the manner of Natalie Cole's UNFORGETTABLE, Elvis Presley's CHRISTMAS DUETS is a collection of Christmas songs that Elvis recorded throughout his career, remixed in 2008 to add new vocal parts by many of today's biggest female country stars, some of whom had not yet been born when Elvis died in 1977. Guest vocalists include Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, LeAnn Rimes, and Amy Grant. Other guests include Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John, the only two vocalists here whose careers intersected with Elvis chronologically.

| | Johnny Cash American IV: The Man Comes Around CD (2002) Bonus DVD
Straight Ahead songs
$11.99 "Give My Love To Rose" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Includes a bonus DVD featuring a music video for the song "Hurt".
When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume.
Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings ...
| | John Denver Definitive All-Time Greatest Hits CDs (2004) Bonus CD
Straight Ahead album
$9.59 The title of this collection by the Jesus of 1970s soft pop makes no bones about its intentions. Fortunately, it delivers what it promises in spades. DEFINITIVE ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS chronicles the hit-packed career of John Denver without missing a trick. From his earliest, most folk-oriented material ("Leaving on a Jet Plane," a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary) to his more country-flavored compositions ("Take Me Home, Country Roads," the stomp-along "Thank God I'm a Country Boy"), we're given a full picture of Denver's abilities. Early-'80s duets with Placido Domingo ("Perhaps ...

| | Texas Jim Lewis & His Lone Star Cowboys CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Straight Ahead songs
$16.25 Texas Jim Lewis appeared in numerous films and scored one national hit ("Too Late to Worry, Too Blue to Cry" in 1944), but isn't often counted among the top rank of Western swing bandleaders. His band featured high-profile players such as Spade Cooley and Merle Travis at various times, but Lewis was partial to novelty music and he switched gears too often to establish an identifiable sound. This 31-track import collects Standard transcriptions recorded with various lineups throughout the '40s, which veer from Texas dancehall swing to Sons of the Pioneers-style group vocal pieces that borrow from the Sons' repertoire. The novelty tracks incorporate Lewis' Hezzie Triesch-inspired washboard and horn getup, but the resulting music isn't nearly as wacky as that of the Hoosier Hot Shots. A few fiddle ...
| | Dale Watson Best Of The Hightone Years CD (2002)
Straight Ahead album
$10.69 While Dale Watson is heavily influenced by Merle Haggard in his singing, songwriting, and image, criticizing him for that is like criticizing any contemporary singer-songwriter for following in the unavoidable footsteps of Bob Dylan. As this extremely useful career summary shows, Watson is an important country artist in his own right. He carries the torch of honky-tonk music, singing about verities like cheating, drinking, trucking, and the tribulations of the working man over a band that's honed it's chops in countless roadhouses across the country. Watson's deep, unwavering tone is completely convincing on a tradition-minded twangfest like "Truckin' Man," but the twist comes when you realize that the song is sung from the point of view of a non-trucking daydreamer. Similarly, "Pity Party" and "I Hate These Songs" turn the convention of the cry-in-your-beer weeper ever so slightly on its ear while fitting comfortably in the tradition that inspired them. As THE BEST OF THE HIGHTONE YEARS makes clear, Watson is fully capable of filling the shoes of Merle for a new generation without resorting to mere imitation.
