Blue Diamond is an excellent newgrass album that juxtaposes contemporary folk songs by Bob Dylan with standards by Carter Stanley, and country songs by Buck Owens. It proves that the Johnson Mountain Boys remain one of the best progressive bluegrass combos of the '70s and '80s. ~ Thom Owens

| | Laurie Lewis True Stories CD (1993)
Blue Diamond CD music
$14.79 Laurie Lewis has enjoyed most of her support from traditional bluegrass and folk audiences, and yet she's hardly a slave to tradition. A varied release, True Stories ranges from the traditional Irish song "Singing Bird" to the country gems "Who Will Watch the Home Place," "Still a Fool," and "Val's Cabin" to folk-pop numbers like "Knocking on Your Door Again" and "Swept Away." The Bay Area native is as excellent a songwriter as she is a vocalist, and it isn't hard to imagine "Val's Cabin" or "You'll Be Leaving Me" being big country hits with slicker production and some of Nashville's promotional muscle. Lewis' audience is a small one, but her music is definitely well worth getting to know. ~ Alex Henderson
Recorded at Tomland Studios, Pacheco and Mobius Music, San FRancisco, California.
Personnel: Laurie Lewis (vocals, fiddle, viola); Peter McLaughlin (vocals, tenor, guitar); ...
| | Paul Bluegrass Gospe Williams Higher Ground CD (2002)
Blue Diamond music CDs
$14.69 While Nashville musicians once unabashedly paid their respects to a higher power upon receiving a Grammy, contemporary bluegrass and country prefer hiding from their Protestant roots. On Higher Ground, Paul Williams and Cliff Waldron travel back in time to offer a dozen gospel-tinged songs with bluegrass backing. Indeed, listening to "My Lord Grows Sweeter Each Day" and "Will You Meet Me over Yonder" will convince connoisseurs of country gospel that not much has changed. This is even truer of the a cappella "He Whispered Sweet Peace to Me" and a song like "Another Mile," with its four-part harmony. A number of pieces like Johnnie Masters' "They've Made a New Bible" and the Louvin ...

| | Tracy Chapman Matters Of The Heart CD (1992)
Blue Diamond music CDs
$8.65 Chapman's debut and its quickly produced follow-up CROSSROADS sound very much alike. While not a total departure, 1992's MATTERS OF THE HEART has a much different, richer sound. Subtle elements of world music, blues, and jazz enrich the folk-based starkness of the previous records. Unfortunately, this album was slightly too different for many of Chapman's early fans, ...

| | Maura O'Connell Walls And Windows CD (2001)
Blue Diamond album
$15.05 A number of fascinating opposites characterize Maura O'Connell's approach to music. Born and raised in Ireland, she currently lives in Nashville. She's recorded Celtic and country albums, but also worked with newgrass pioneers Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck. Her rich, powerful voice, however, travels with her wherever she goes. Walls & Windows is her first recording in several years and her debut on the Sugar Hill label. This time she's backed by a full band with players like Darrell Scott and Dave Francis providing soulful, layered sound. This approach works well for O'Connell's potent vocals, providing lots of cushion on upbeat pieces like "Every River" and "Walls." Her song choice, as with previous projects, serves her well. She has chosen several pieces by Patty Griffin, including a passionate version of "I Wonder" with a backing vocal by the writer. There are two tracks, "To the Homeland" and "A Far Cry," by relative newcomer ...
